Skills, they’re the building blocks of knowledge. Right? Learning how to crochet a flat circle is one tool that every crocheter should have in their toolbox.

Crocheting a flat circle can come in handy when crocheting just about anything – often you’ll need to know how to crochet a flat circle to begin a crochet hat, to crochet amigurumi toys, to make baskets and other items. This technique is a very useful one to know as a beginner crocheter or for perfecting your skills to work on designing your own pieces.

Increasing the number of techniques you can utilize when crocheting makes following creative patterns more fun! Sometimes when reading a pattern or watching a video tutorial, the teacher may rush through how to crochet a flat circle as part of the project. So it’s really helpful to be able to understand how that shape is made and do it on your own!

Learning how to crochet a flat circle is just one of many techniques every crocheter should know, others include how to keep straight edges in crochet and how to change color in crochet.

What to make with flat circles

Once you’ve mastered how to crochet a flat circle you can put those skills to good use to make all sorts of projects.

The Yarn

In this video tutorial I use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick – one of my all-time favorite yarns! It’s great for myriad projects but also for learning new stitches and techniques, like how to crochet a flat circle!

Wool Ease Thick & Quick comes in a ton of beautiful colors and my favorite is the color I used called Fisherman. It’s a stunning off-white that’s not too yellow. It’s a beautiful cream color that fits just about everyone’s taste!

How to Crochet a Flat Circle PATTERN

MATERIALS

-Any yarn and corresponding hook size

I used Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn in the color Fisherman and a K 6.5mm crochet hook

-Stitch marker (a bobbi pin or spare piece of yarn in another color works fine for this)

NOTES

-See abbreviations below the written instructions.
-Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round. Be sure to move it up when you begin each round.
-Numbers within < > indicate the number of final stitches in that round. Be sure to double check your stitch counts so that you make sure you are on track to make a perfect flat circle.
-This pattern creates a circle working in continuous rounds without a seam. If you wish to join your rounds simply slip stitch at the end of each round and chain 1 stitch.
-When the pattern reads “inc, sec 2; rep around” that means: increase (two single crochets in the same stitch) once, single crochet in each of the following two stitches, repeat this entire sequence over and over until you’ve finished the round.
-Save this page to your Pinterest board if you need to watch it often to remember how to make a flat circle.

Easy is an understatement!

You know how you see a handmade piece of clothing online and your internal monologue immediately sounds like “woah, that’s complicated! I could never! Show me a scarf pattern!” I’m here to tell you that I felt that way for a good long time until I found the right patterns and tutorials for me.

This easy crochet cardigan is just about as simple as it could get – it’s made of T shaped panels that are sewn together, that’s it! There’s no fussy shaping or difficult elements that take this beyond an easy level pattern.

The Inspiration + Design

One of my patterns from earlier this year is constructed in a very similar fashion to this – it’s called the Cabana Top. That pattern is a pullover sweater style that is also made up of basic T shaped panels. It’s been a popular pattern here on the blog so I knew I wanted to make an easy crochet cardigan style sister pattern.

This pattern is only slightly different from the Cabana Top. Instead of two identical T shaped panels that are sewn together, we work one large T shaped panel for the back. Then two separate panels for the front that together make up that T shape. This mirrors the back only with an opening to make it a cardigan.

I maintained the same slightly lacy shoulder and top of sleeve of this easy crochet cardigan. However the yarn I used fills in those gaps quite a bit. If you wanted more stitch definition I would suggest using a yarn that isn’t quite as fluffy as the one I used.

The Yarn

I used Lion Brand’s LB Collection Chainette yarn for this easy crochet cardigan pattern. It’s been a smash hit ever since it came out last year! Once you feel it in your own hand, you’ll know why. This yarn is a luxurious blend of 70% baby alpaca, 18% virgin wool, and 12% polyamide for durability. Chainette is spun in a chain style structure (instead of plied like usual yarn is) and this means the stitches look more woven. It also means the yarn is very fluffy in that it allows air to pass through it and creates a lightweight feeling on the skin.

The color range in this yarn is one of my all-time favorites from any yarn brand. The colors are all heathered and a little rustic without being too muddy. They’re somehow both bright and soft at the same time. My favorites are the pink, cream, mustard and olive but really there isn’t a single color in the line that I don’t like!

I’ve made a couple of other patterns, apart from this easy crochet cardigan, with this yarn. These include my Knit Gwen Hat (that I’ve been wearing all season!) and my Crochet Elle Convertible Shawl.

The Inspiration + Design

I’ve always wanted to make a pumpkin colored sweater. One that I would pull out every year to signal the first seasonal change to fall. Turning leaves, a brisk chill in the air, some apple cider and my pumpkin colored sweater.

With that in mind, I knew I wanted my sweater to be warm but light so that I could layer it with lighter shirts underneath or a jacket on top for when the temperature changes. I also wanted this sweater to be oversized and comfy – knowing that I usually catch a cold this time of year I needed something extra cozy!

So I built that comfort right into the sweater. I chose a fluffy yarn and worked plenty of inches of room into the design and I’m so happy with the result!

The Yarn

I’ve loved Lion Brand’s LB Collection Chainette yarn since it came out last year (I’ve already made a hat and a shawl with it!) so I knew a knit sweater in this yarn would be dreamy.

I was picky about this sweater being the *right* shade of pumpkin. Not too red, not too yellow, not too bright orange. And this Amber color of Chainette really, truly, is everything I wanted! It’s vibrant but muted and heathered and gorgeous. It’s everything I wanted and I couldn’t be happier with my new sweater!

All the colors of Chainette are truly gorgeous – I rarely love every single color in a yarn line but with this one, I really do! So even if you aren’t looking for an orange sweater, try out another color because the fluff and lightweight warmth of this yarn is unmatched.

3. Crochet Diamond Berry Stitch Blanket from Daisy Farm Crafts – Original yarn: Patons Classic Wool Roving yarn / Substitute: Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy
   Since CME is 100% acrylic, this is a great substitute for people with wool allergies! And I’m just especially partial to this yarn. Ever since it was debuted, I’ve had a hard time keeping it off my hook or needles (yes it’s perfect for both crafts). It’s squish-tastic, soft, smooth, and bouncy, and about as perfect as it gets for marshmallow-like fluffy blanket goodness (how’s that for adjectives?!). It’s a stunning weight 5 bulky yarn, which (if you ask me) is the perfect thing for beginners. It’s nice and thick so you can clearly see your stitches, and easy to hold and work with for those completely foreign to yarn. And it’s works up quicker than those pesky thin yarns! Triple win. 4. Striped Knit Blanket by Rescued Paw Designs – Original yarn: Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice / Substitute: Lion Brand’s Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling
   There’s really nothing basic about Basic Stitch. Get ready for it to be your new go-to acrylic yarn that you find yourself grabbing again and again. It can stand the test of time like no other because it’s treated to resist pilling. Even if you do see those fuzzy bumps begin to appear, just pop it in the wash and they’re gone! It’s pretty magical. Both of these yarns also have an enormous palette for choices galore, making it an easy swap. 
5. Crochet Fisherman Blanket from Mouse and Thimble – Original yarn: Bernat Blanket yarn / Substitute: Lion Brand’s Wool-Ease Thick & Quick OR Lion Brand’s Homespun Thick & Quick
   I gotta say, Bernat Blanket is a staple yarn and – as its name suggests – is a really good choice for blankets. However, these LB substitutes offer more unique texture and colorway options to bring something different to your stash. The Blanket yarn is 100% polyester, which is hard to come by. So if you can’t find this one in your local store or want to work with something else, we’ll need to switch fibers here. In this case, over to the wool side of the house! I am almost always able to find some kind of WETQ in my craft stores and usually only come across the classic Homespun, which is indeed different from the Thick & Quick edition – so be extra careful to double check your labels here. Also, keep in mind there’s almost always more beyond what you see sitting on the shelf. So for a full range of options, I advise shopping online for this project!

3. DIY Blanket Scarf from Debrosse – Yep, this tutorial is just what it sounds like – how to take a square of fabric and make it into a scarf. We’re talking no sew here, you guys. Now this is something I can get behind. Sweet Teresa included her favorite sources for materials too! If you’re looking for a customizable pattern (a.k.a. something you can make duplicates of, and no one will know), this is it. Prepare to be amazed!
4. Jumbo Alpaca Crochet Scarf by All About Ami  – If this isn’t the cozy, snuggly scarf you were looking for, I’m not sure you’ll ever find it. I’m all about comfort, but it’s a bonus when I look put together and stylish too, which is exactly this pattern! Plus, I’m a sucker for a nice button accent. Let’s talk babies! Baby things are amongst my favorites to have working up on the hook, for so many reasons! 1. They’re adorable and tiny and cute. 2. They’re small projects, meaning they work up fast! *yes!* 3. …okay maybe only a couple reasons, but I don’t need any more convincing than that!

Here in Florida, spring came and went real quick. Mother Nature said hi, hello, here’s some flowers – okay, g’bye! Then enter the sweltering hot humidity that we have affectionately named summer. Anyone else a southerner experiencing this intense heat? Please say I’m not the only one suffering…
