The Inspiration + Design

The Fraîche Crochet Tote Bag is one I’ve had on my list to make since late last summer. I’ve seen so many gorgeous crochet tote bags over the years but they’re usually stretchy and open. I wondered what a more structured tote might be like (one that could pass my laptop test! And it did, no sagging or stretching!). After making my thermal stitch potholders last fall I knew this stitch would make an incredibly durable crochet tote bag.

Fraîche is french for “fresh” in the feminine distinction and translates also to “dewy, crisp, youthful” and I feel like those concepts perfectly describe this bag design. It’s fresh and new in concept yet somehow classic and crisp. It’s the perfect mixture of new, on-trend elements while still being timeless. My favorite kind of design!

The straps are my favorite part – they’re all crochet so you don’t need to purchase hard-to-find purse straps and they’re easy to make. A simple tiny tube actually makes for a fairly durable and rigid strap – especially if you thread some macrame or parachute cord through the center to prevent against stretching even more (this part is optional). Threading the strap through simple eyelet holes in the body of the bag make assembly simple and the crochet tote bag is easy to use. One could even add rivets to the eyelet strap holes for even easier strap movement as you load and unload your crochet tote bag with goodies.

One crochet tote bag, so many uses!

In designing this crochet tote bag I wanted to make sure it could pass my “laptop test” – would it stretch out or sag with a heavy laptop inside? NOPE! It passed with flying colors! The rigid thermal stitch and the sturdy side seams supported the weight of my laptop perfectly. (Full disclosure: I have a 13″ Macbook air – so not the largest or heaviest laptop ever but I believe this bag would hold up well no matter what you load up inside!).

This crochet tote bag would also make an excellent farmer’s market companion. Filling with fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers is easy with its accessible body and incredibly thick structure. There is also quite a bit of privacy with this bag because the body isn’t see-through! Because let’s be honest – we all love to stop at the local bakery table at the farmer’s market and load up on chocolate croissants. Is that just me??

Simple and stunning construction

I wanted to make sure that this crochet tote bag design wasn’t too complicated. That’s why it’s made from one big rectangle! I believe that adventurous beginners can make this project – if you’ve already learned the thermal stitch by making my potholders or coasters, this bag is no more tricky than that!

We start by making one large thermal stitch rectangle with two eyelet holes at each end (don’t worry these are really just chain 1, skip 1 spaces). Then we fold it up and seam the sides, leaving a thermal stitch folded bottom for extra strength. Then the strap is made and threaded through the eyelet holes to be seamed into one continuous tube. That’s it!

I’ve also made sure to include lots of photos on the assembly of the bag, just to take care of my beginner crocheters out there!

The Thermal Stitch

I love love LOVE the thermal stitch. It’s become my favorite stitch for durable, rigid projects. Combine the stitch with a cotton blend yarn and you’ve got a recipe for heirloom projects that can handle regular use! Wahoo!

Yarn + Substitution

I used Lion Brand’s Re-Up yarn in ecru, which is a worsted weight yarn. It’s a cotton polyester blend yarn that’s made from recycled water bottles! It’s a very unique yarn that comes in a lot of gorgeous, vintage-inspired colors and is extremely sturdy for projects like crochet tote bags, potholders, and coasters (all of which are free patterns here on the blog using the thermal stitch!). A note on substituting yarns for this project: there is a lot of variation in the yarn industry within the world of worsted weight category 4 weight yarn. The best way I know to compare yarns of different origins, fiber contents, and brand are to look at the yardage per gram. On the yarn label for any yarn (from a big box store or from an independent dyer), the yardage for the ball or skein is listed.

The Re-Up yarn I used from Lion Brand is a 70 gram ball with 114 yards. 114/70=1.63 yards per gram.

I try to make sure any yarns I’m substituting are absolutely no more than 0.5 yards per gram difference from the yarn originally used in the pattern. The lower this number is, the closer these comparative yarns will be in gauge, resulting in a seamless finished project!

I do however recommend going with a cotton or cotton blend worsted weight yarn for this project, even if you don’t use Re-Up. The cotton is more stiff and rigid than other kinds of fiber meaning that your crochet tote bag won’t stretch very much when you fill it with goodies!

Strap

With a single strand of yarn and F 3.75mm crochet hook, ch 6, skip 1 stitch

Row 1: Sc across <5>

Row 2: Wrap strip of sc into a loop and sc into the first stitch from Row 1, work sc in the round

Continue working sc in the round until your strap measures 50″ long or the desired length of your entire strap piece.

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing, do not weave ends.

Assembly

Fold large rectangle with right sides together to seam up sides. Take care to align foundation chain and last slip stitch row. With a long piece of scrap yarn (held double) seam selvedge edges with a mattress stitch, pulling each stitch tight as you sew to create a strong seam. Weave ends to secure. Turn inside out (optional).

Thread unfinished strap through the eyelet holes created (these should match up) as pictured. You may thread a bit of macrame cord through the strap for added structure to prevent stretch but it’s not necessary. With a tapestry needle, sew two ends of the strap together with a whip stitch to form one continuous tube strap. Weave ends to secure.

The Inspiration + Design

I started hand dyeing yarn back in 2017 and I fell in love quickly. I started a business selling our hand dyed yarn and called it Sewrella Yarn! We open our store once a month for themed collections on the 15th of every month and it always sells out fast! (Follow us on instagram here to stay caught up). We have so much fun creating themed colorways around different collection ideas like Hocus Pocus at Halloween, Gilmore Girls (the TV show), and Disneyland to name a few.

I had some partial skeins of a bunch of colorways laying around and wanted to whip up a hat pattern to use them. I loved the play on words with a “dip dye” look and bonus – I could use up my stash!

I chose one of my favorite stitches (back loop only half double crochet) to get a more stretchy fabric that looks and behaves more similarly to knitting. This makes a super warm and comfy crochet hat!

The perfect crochet hat for anyone – beginners included!

This hat is made by crocheting a rectangle and sewing it together, that’s it! There’s a not-so-fancy color change that I’ll teach you in a video but otherwise, this crochet hat is the easiest thing I’ve made… and just look at the payoff!

I seriously don’t know if I’ve ever made anything that was quite as satisfying as this. This crochet hat looks and feels store bought, or even better and it was so simple and mindless.

Sizes for you and everyone you know

I did the math for ya and the crochet hat pattern is available in all sizes, from preemie babies to large adults! I’m wearing the Adult Small and my son is wearing the Child size (he’s almost 4 but has an enormous noggin).

Just measure the head circumference of the recipient (if you’re able) and choose the size closest to that measurement via the chart in the crochet hat pattern below. You can also make the size that the recipient falls into naturally, the sizing is based on standard measurements from the Craft Yarn Council.

That magic mid-row color change

The technique used to create this sharp color change is a mid-row technique that’s so much simpler than it looks. All I do is carry the yarn up the back in the same way for each row and there is a special way I do the yarn over. Watch the color change video in the crochet hat pattern below to see how I do it!

High end + Affordable

I made these crochet hats using odds and ends of yarn from my stash but you will need to choose two yarns that go well together!

In each of the hats pictured I used our own hand dyed yarn for one color and a more affordable Lion Brand Yarn for the other color. The end result is a wool blend, super soft hat that didn’t cost a fortune to make. One could certainly make an entire hat of this style in high end yarn or more affordable yarn and it would be just as gorgeous.

When you make your crochet hat, use the tips below on looking at yardage to determine what yarns will blend well together in this way. Get creative and use up some of your stash and if you’re able, think about supporting an artisanal hand dyer (when used for one color of the hat, one skein of hand dyed yarn could make two or more hats, depending on what sizes you make).

Yarn + Substitution

I used a blend of Lion Brand’s Touch of Cashmere in Gull Grey and some of my own hand dyed yarn from Sewrella Yarn (an older colorway called Lodge) in my son’s hat. I used Lion Brand’s LB Collection Merino Yak Alpaca in Dusty Pink and Sewrella Yarn yarn in Marshmallow for my own hat. All are Category 3 Light weight and of comparable gauge.

Let’s use my adult hat as an example since that’s the one I wrote the pattern instructions for:

The Merino Yak Alpaca I used from Lion Brand is an 50 gram ball with 126 yards. 126/50=2.52 yards per gram.
The Handmade Home Fibers hand dyed yarn is a 100 gram skein with 231 yards. 231/100=2.31 yards per gram.
2.52-2.31=0.21 yards per gram difference

I try to make sure any yarns I’m blending within one project like this are absolutely no more than 0.5 yards per gram difference from each other. The lower this number is, the closer these comparative yarns will be in gauge, resulting in a seamless finished project!

DIP DYE CROCHET HAT

With Color 1 Ch A changing to Color 2 after B chs, sk 2 sts.

Row 1: Hdc across changing to Color 1 when you come to it, turn <C>

Row 2: Ch 2, blo hdc across changing to Color 2 when you come to it, turn <C>

Row 3: Ch 2, blo hdc across changing to Color 1 when you come to it, turn <C>

Repeat rows 2-3 until you’ve finished D rows.

Finish off leaving long tails for sewing.

Assembly

Fold rectangle with short sides together making a rough square shape.

Seam Color 1 section foundation chain and last row with a mattress stitch. Weave ends.

Seam Color 2 section foundation chain and last row with a mattress stitch. Continue to crown gathering without breaking yarn..

Gather the crown by sewing a whip stitch around the selvedge edge through every other row as pictured. Pull yarn to cinch the crown after sewing all the way around. Secure by sewing across the cinched top a few times. Weave ends.

Turn hat right side out and cuff brim. You may sew in place but I didn’t find it necessary.

Attach faux fur or yarn pom pom to center of cinched top.

Easy is an understatement!

This crochet triangle shawl/scarf/wrap does NOT get any easier. It’s a series of double crochet stitches with a few chain stitches to create that pointed triangle shape, and that’s it!

I love the simplicity of this design. Once I got past row 2 I had the pattern memorized – I turned on a good movie and zoomed through the project. It’s totally Netflix-able and easy to pick up and put down without having to refer back to the pattern.

The Inspiration + Design

I loved creating my ever popular Wishing Well Wrap crochet triangle shawl back in 2017 using Lion Brand Mandala Baby yarn. It’s been a crowd favorite ever since so I knew I needed to bring back a sister design.

That first crochet triangle shawl was a tad more intricate with alternating double crochets and rows of eyelet stitches. While beautiful, I wanted to create a simpler, more beginner friendly version.

I’ve created other crochet triangle shawl projects over the years like the Le Nuage Wrap and the Elle Convertible Shawl but this one might be my favorite!

A beginner friendly shape

A crochet triangle shawl seems intricate but it’s really not. This project is great for a beginner that’s worked simple scarves that are plain rectangles.

A triangle is just a step beyond that shape as it requires basic increases, but don’t let that scare you! The pattern itself is two lines of instruction and I even have a video tutorial to help you.

You got this!

The Yarn

I chose to return to the wide world of self-striping cake yarns for this pattern. These yarns have taken the craft world by storm over the last several years and can be found in stores and online nearly everywhere yarn is sold.

The great thing about these yarns is that they take all the color mixing guesswork out of making a multi-colored project. The cake yarns usually hold several shades of colors that are supposed to go together.

I think some colorways do a better job of this than others and my all-time favorite is the Mandala Sparkle in Nova that I used for this crochet triangle shawl. I love blush (seriously, I think my car would be blush if Subaru would answer my incessant requests for it) and this blend of blush, peach, light and smoky greys with lavender is just perfect.

Mandala Sparkle got that name from the thin strand of shimmering metallic thread running through the cake. It blends harmoniously with the yarn and you don’t notice it until the light hits your project just the right way. It’s subtle and gorgeous!

Other favorite cake yarn lines are the original Mandala, Mandala Baby, and the new Mandala Ombre all available from Lion Brand Yarn.

SPARKLE CAKE CROCHET TRIANGLE SHAWL

Ch 4, sl st to first st to form a ring.

Row 1 : Ch 2, (working into center of ring) 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc, turn <6>

Row 2 : Ch 2, 2 dc, dc to ch space, (dc, ch 2, dc) into ch space, dc to last st, 3 dc <12>

Repeat row 2 until you’ve finished 40 rows.

*note: each row increases by 6 dc sts total

Finish off & weave ends.

Wet block your shawl.
(recommended for animal fiber yarns – wool, alpaca)

Steam block your shawl.

Tassels

Make 2 tassels using a small hard cover book, tassel maker, or small piece of cardboard.

Using top tie, affix tassels to either end of your shawl after it’s completely dry post-blocking. Tie a knot to secure and weave both ends through the tassel head and the shawl repeatedly before weaving end finally along the shawl’s stitches.

The Inspiration + Design

Crochet accessories are what the transition from summer to fall is for! I’m having trouble letting go of the light, breezy shapes and colors of summer so I’m not putting them away just yet.

I’ve never designed a crescent shaped shawl before and I don’t think this one will be my last. It’s such a fun, delicate shape that is light and warm all at once.

I added heavy fringe to this shawl for added drama and style. It looks a little bare without the fringe and I love the statement it adds!

The Yarn + Kit

I blended two yarns together to make this piece and I love the way they mix and mingle. I held together a strand of Lion Brand Coboo in Pale Pink (a gorgeous, soft, drapey cotton bamboo blend yarn) and a strand of Lion Brand Summer Nights in Blue Lagoon (a lace weight sparkly variegated yarn with subtle blue and pink tones).

These two yarns played so nicely together and they create a really interesting, feminine look without any fuss – seriously, this entire pattern is just a one row repeat!!

-This shawl is worked in one piece from the top down beginning with the top center. Simple 1 row repeat in turned rows until the desired length is achieved.

Crochet Glimmer Shawl

Hold 1 strand of each yarn together throughout.

Ch 33, sk 1 st

Row 1: 2 sc, 2 sc, sc until 2 sts remain, 2 sc, 2 sc, t <36>

Row 2: Ch 2, 2 Sc, 2 sc, blo sc until 2 sts remain, 2 sc, 2 sc, t <40>

Rep row 2 until you’ve finished 72 rows or until the deepest part of your shawl measures 18” from row 1 to last row and about 80” wide <320>

Finish off, weave ends.

BLOCKING

Blocking is necessary to get this shawl looking it’s best. Please complete this step before moving onto fringe!

Set up foam blocking mats or a couple of dry towels (that you won’t need for the next day or so) on a table, ironing board, or the floor.

Lay your dry shawl out on the blocking surface right side up.

With blocking pins or rustproof sewing pins, stretch and pin the shawl to make a soft crescent shape. Stretch and manipulate the shawl until you love the look.

With a clothing steamer or an iron on the steam setting, saturate the shawl with steam. It should feel damp to the touch.

Let dry overnight before removing pins and moving on to the fringe step.

BRUSHED FRINGE

Holding 1 strand of each yarn together-

Cut 2 pieces about 10 in. long <totaling 4 strands>

*Tip: speed up the process by setting up pins to wrap around and cut on your blocking mat!

Attach to the first stitch of the last row as follows. Fold all pieces in half together. Use your crochet hook to pull the fold of the yarn partially through the stitch. Pull tails of the fringe through the loop created. Tighten.

Rep fringe in every stitch across. This is tedious but imperative to the thick brushed fringe look.

Trim all fringe to be as even as possible, following the curve of your shawl. Go slow and always trim as little as possible.

The Inspiration + Design

This tutorial is for those folks that have always wanted to learn to knit and are ready to learn the basics! Instead of sitting down and teaching a few stitches (where all you walk away with is a weird little square of messy stitches) I decided to teach you how to make a whole scarf start to finish, even if you’ve never knit before!

This design is as simple as it gets, it’s a fun way to get acquainted with the craft and decide if it’s for you!

The Yarn + Kit

I collaborated with my favorite yarn brand for the materials for this project. Lion Brand Yarn is a name you’ll find all over my blog and for good reason! Their yarns are high quality and affordable (which is awesome, you’ll usually only find one attribute or the other!).

I decided on their Color Made Easy yarn for this project. It’s bulky weight which means the strand of yarn is thicker than a lot of other yarns on the shelf. Bigger yarn means bigger stitches which are easier to see when you’re just getting the hang of things. A lot of beginners find thicker yarn easier to hold in your hands at first while you figure out how to work yarn and two needles in tandem to make a scarf.

Lion Brand has graciously created a kit for this project on their website! You can find it HERE. The kit includes all the yarn you need to make the entire scarf, the exact knitting needles I used in the video, and a yarn needle (for sewing your scarf into an infinity loop if you so choose). There are great color options in this yarn to suit all tastes so check out the kit before you get started!

HOW TO KNIT A SCARF WRITTEN PATTERN

Cast on 23

*Note: the width of these stitches will be the width of your scarf.

Row 1: Slip 1 st, K across <23>

Rep Row 1 until you’ve finished 70” or 150 rows.

Cast off all sts.

Weave ends.

With a spare piece of yarn sew Row 1 to last Row with a mattress stitch – just like you’re threading shoelaces.

The Inspiration + Design

I love making and wearing ponchos! They are easy to layer over a simple comfortable tank in the warm summer months and wear wonderfully over long sleeve tees in the chillier months. They’re such versatile accessories that are so worth the time to make.

Last spring I made a poncho called the Ava Poncho and it is still among the most popular patterns here on the blog! My favorite part of the Ava Poncho is the unique 2 panel construction. With two long, thin rectangles and a couple of seams you end up with this sort of triangular shaped poncho! It’s so fun to watch it come together, especially considering the panels themselves are an easy, mindless project to work on while watching Netflix.

When I was trying to decide on a stitch pattern, I knew I wanted to work in some simple lace stitches without making anything complicated. I opted for simple chain 1 skip 1 eyelets, combined with some really easy striping (don’t worry about weaving tons of ends, we will carry the yarn up the side) and the product is a textural poncho that looks detailed and stylish.

The Yarn + Kit

I tried out Lion Brand’s LB Collection Superwash Merino yarn for this project and it worked up into a gorgeous, warm-but-not-too-warm poncho! The color selection in this yarn is one of my favorites of all the Lion Brand lines and any color option duo would be gorgeous. The colors in Superwash Merino are a bit earthy and very natural looking, while still being vivid and saturated – my favorite kind of color!

I chose to use Hemp and Antique for a more neutral looking poncho to wear during all seasons. Some of my other favorite colors are Peony, Teal, Wisteria, and Dijon. If I were to make another poncho in another color, I would pick one of these brighter, more colorful hues and pair it with a neutral like Antique or Hemp! This way you get a colorful poncho without being too “loud” in color.

MEASUREMENTS

PATTERN NOTES

-For reference, model is 5’5” tall 38” bust, and wearing the duo poncho in a size M/L. Fit is oversized, for a more fitted poncho size down.

-Sizing listed in the pattern will be in XS/S with M/L, XL/2XL, 3XL/4XL listed in parenthesis such as 54 (58, 62, 66) whereas 54 for size XS/S, 58 for size M/L, 62 for size XL/2XL, and 66 for size 3XL/4XL. When only one number is given, it applies to all sizes. To follow pattern more easily, circle/highlight all numbers pertaining to your size before beginning.

-This poncho is worked in 2 identical pieces and seamed in a creative way. Neckline is worked last by working into the selvedge edge.

-All sizing is quite flexible and based on the CYC sizing regulations.

Crochet Duo Poncho

PANELS

Make 2

With MC yarn, Ch 54 (58, 62, 66), sk 2 sts

Row 1: Starting in thrid chain from hook, Hdc across, chain two and t <52, 56, 60, 64>

Row 2: Hdc across. Finish last stitch with CC yarn.

Change to CC yarn

(do not break MC yarn, carry all yarns up the side of the work throughout)

Row 3: Ch 3, sk 1 hdc st, hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, hdc; rep from * across, chain three and t <26, 28, 30, 32 hdc>

Row 4: sk 1 hdc st, hdc, *ch 1, sk 1, hdc; rep from * across. Finish last stitch with mc yarn, chain two and turn.

Change to MC yarn

Rep Rows 1-4 until you’ve finished 76 (82, 88, 94) rows.

Finish off, weave all ends.

Finished panel measurements:

XS/S:  16 x 32”

M/L:  17 x 34”

XL/2XL:  18 x 36”

3XL/4XL:  19 x 38”

Block panels.

SEAMING

With a long piece of spare yarn, thread your tapestry needle.

Place one panel (first panel) lengthwise and the other (second panel) widthwise, right sides facing up. You should have one panel’s short side matching up with another panel’s long side, making a giant “L” shape.

Where the panels meet, use a mattress stitch to seam your panels together, taking care to hide carried yarn in the seam. Sew through tops of the stitches on one panel and through the ends of the rows on the other panel.

To create the second seam, fold first panel in to meet your first seam. Fold your second panel in to meet the end of the other panel. You should have a giant heart shape.

Use a mattress stitch to seam your panels together again long the first panel’s short side and your second panel’s selvedge edge.

Weave all ends.

NECKLINE

Identify the neckline area (smaller opening at the top of your seamed panels). Decide which side will be your front and back.

Join yarn to the center of the neckline back, Ch 2

Rnd 1:  Hdc evenly around neckline selvedge edge (working 1 st in end of each row), sl st to join

Note: The number of stitches here isn’t as important as making sure you have worked evenly around.

Rnd 2:  Ch 2, hdc in each st around, sl st to join

Rnd 3:  Ch 1, sc in each st around, sl st to join

Finish off, weave all ends.

FRINGE

Cut pieces of MC yarn about 10 in. long (5 per tassel fringe unit).

Fold 5 pieces in half together. Use your crochet hook to pull the fold of the yarn partially through the edge of any CC row (I like to begin at the front center ”point”. Pull tails of the fringe through the loop created. Tighten and trim tails.

Rep tassel fringe at about every 1.5” all the way around.

Trim all fringe to be as even as possible.

The Inspiration + Design

I’ve been dyeing my own yarn now for over a year and it’s a shame I haven’t designed more projects with it! I’m putting a stop to that with this stunningly simple shawl pattern!

Spring and summer are what I like to call “breezy layer” seasons. When the wind kicks up by the shore or the air gets chilly after sundown I always like to have a light wrap or cardigan around to throw on over my tanks and tees. It’s been a while since I designed a shawl and I wanted something different from my usual triangle shawl (like the Wishing Well Wrap or Le Nuage Wrap) I designed last year. I decided on a simple rectangle that’s large enough to snuggle up in without too much extra fabric that would be hot and heavy.

Simple eyelet stitches made by skipping stitches and easier-than-you-think ribbing make this project easy enough for a beginner – even though the finished product looks super luxe and stylish. I love tossing this wrap on over a simple black V neck and Jeans (my top is the Grace Wrap Top & is handmade by my friend Raney at www.RaneMade.com – check out her gorgeous comfy clothes here!)

The Yarn

Once I decided on what I wanted to make with our yarn, I set out to choose a yarn base and colorway – fun!

I love our Crocheter’s DK base yarn – we always dye a lot of it for our monthly shop updates (get on our email list HERE to be notified of the next one!) and I originally hand selected it to be ideal for crocheting. So much of the hand dyed yarn community caters to knitters that I knew I had to carry a yarn just for crocheters!

Ever since I first dyed our Vanilla Bean colorway back in January, I knew I wanted to make something with it. It’s a soft vanilla color with tiny black speckles that are barely there. It’s the perfect amount of interest without being too busy! I paired it with our Ava solid pink color that’s the perfect dusty shade of blush.

I’m so thrilled with how this super soft yarn worked up and how the colors and drape all came together in the finished product.

The Inspiration + Design

I love a good tote bag (seriously, who doesn’t?) but I wanted a little more luxury with my utility. So when I had a bunch of my favorite velvet yarn laying around I knew I wanted a squishy circular tote to hold my projects.

I love the luxe mixed media look of leather and super soft velvet, so I knew I wanted a sleek leather handle with my eggplant velvet bag. I love the cognac brown leather and the sturdiness it adds to my squishy bag – especially when it’s weighted down with half a dozen skeins of yarn!

I held the yarn double for this bag so that it had a tad bit more structure to keep the circular shape but this yarn is so pliable and drapey that the bag moves really naturally. It doesn’t squish my project because the structure is a little more rigid, but it also hasn’t lost it’s shape. Win win!

The Yarn

Lion Brand has been releasing stunning yarn after stunning yarn this season and they’re not stopping with this new velvet style yarn, Vel-Luxe. It’s a worsted weight polyester based yarn that feels like crushed velvet & it really is what the label says – LUXE.

There are several velvet yarns on the market but I love this one because it’s a worsted weight (unlike the bulky ones I’ve seen) and it doesn’t shed. Let me say that again –  IT DOES NOT SHED. Hallelujah! Finally a textured yarn with incredible feel and finish without any yarn fuzzies left behind!

The color palette LB chose for this yarn is really wonderful too, it’s refined and elevated with neutrals and color that are everything we want to wear. I made my sample in Eggplant, but I’m so in love with every color – it was hard to choose just one color! Browse them all here.

-Entirety of pattern is worked holding a double strand of Vel-Luxe yarn.

-Sizing is adjustable to be as large or small as you like – to make your bag smaller, do not complete all the rounds of the bag panels before moving on. To make your bag larger, continue in the same pattern of the bag panels to desired size.

-Bag may be made with another super bulky yarn in place of the double stranded worsted velvet yarn I used. Pay close attention to gauge when adjusting yarn.

-Bag will be made in two identical pieces and seamed.

-Place a stitch marker in the first st of each round if you need help identifying where to begin.

Assembly:

With a long piece of spare yarn double stranded (for strength) threaded on a tapestry needle, and wrong sides facing together, whip stitch 72 sts from Rnd 16 from each panel – leave 24 sts unsewn.

Weave ends.

Strap:

Position strap on bag. I lined up the bottom of the strap with the round of 3rd loop hdc.

With scrap yarn (I used 24/7 Cotton from Lion Brand in Ecru), sew into place with a small, sharp tapestry needle.

Repeat on other side of bag.

You’re done! Go flaunt your new luxurious tote bag out and about!

But this weekend I’m headed to NYC for the LB Blogger Bash and we are holding a sip ‘n stitch event where I needed to supply an easy 1 skein pattern with Wool Ease Thick & Quick. Problem is: I realized I didn’t have one!! So I knit up a quick Gwen while watching La La Land the other night.

I’ve been loving a Knit 2 Purl 2 rib lately and the squishy base it gives to a project. Simple stockinette lets this yarn really shine and then a strong, dimensional decrease to close up the top of the hat adds a bit of subtle detail. I thought about adding a pom pom (this fluffy yarn makes such nice poms and there was plenty leftover from 1 skein) but I really love the look of those decreases at the crown so I left it alone!

The Yarn

I used the good old standby, Wool Ease Thick & Quick for this pattern. This new color Carousel (I used it in my Storybook Hood & Pocket Scarf pattern here) is my new favorite. It’s got minty greens and pale pinks with pops of raspberry all pulled together with a soft grey spun throughout. So delicate and pretty!

1 skein makes any size hat – I used Carousel

–Size US #15 (10mm) 16″ circular knitting needles (<<<my favorites!)

-optional alternate to magic loop knitting: 5mm DPNs

–Stitch markers (4)

–Tapestry needle

–Measuring tape

Gauge:

8 sts x 11 rows in stockinette stitch = 4″

k2tog – knit 2 together

Pattern Notes

-This hat pattern is written in several sizes, adult women’s will be bolded throughout as this is our most popular size (& the size pictured).

-You may sub out other super bulky weight yarns, but be mindful of your gauge.

-I will be using the magic loop technique to work the decreases at the crown of my hat. You may also use double pointed needles if you prefer.

-All stitch counts in < > are final stitch counts for the Rnd.

Knit Thick & Quick Gwen Hat

CO 24 (32, 40, 48)

Join to work in the Rnd being careful not to twist your stitches. Place marker at the beginning of Rnd.

Work in K 2 P 2 Rib until piece measures 2″ or 7 Rows

Continue in Stockinette (K all sts) until hat measures 3 (3, 3.5, 4, 4, 4.5)” from rib

Crown Shaping:

Note: Change to working in magic loop or on DPNs as needed.

Next Rnd: Knit each st around placing a stitch marker every 6 (8, 10, 12) sts

You should have 4 st markers total including the marker at the beginning of your Rnd.

Decrease Rnd: K2tog, *K to 2 sts before marker, K2togTBL, sm, K2tog; Rpt from * 2 times more, K to last 2 sts, K2togTBL <16, 24, 32, 40>

Next Rnd: K each st around <16, 24, 32, 40>

Rpt last two Rnds until you have 8 sts remaining

Finish off yarn leaving a long tail. Draw tail through 8 sts on needles. Remove needles and pull tail tight to cinch. Weave ends.
