I was sitting in a conference room at Lion Brand Yarn headquarters, on either side of me were bloggers who created huge success for themselves with yarn, hooks, and a computer – same as me. But I felt WAY out of my element. Until one of the Lion Brand Yarn reps said something to me while we were walking down the streets of New York City toward a Michaels store (because they wanted my feedback on in-store yarn displays… ME?!?!). He said “you’re here because we see your potential, we know what you’re capable of.” That was three years and six-figures of crochet blog income ago. But let me start at the beginning.

I’d always heard of blogging, heck – I read a lot of blogs for recipes, crochet patterns, DIY ideas, and other things. I was a Pinterest junkie since way back when you had to be “invited” to have a Pinterest profile circa 2010 (anybody remember that?!). I’ve always been crafty and creative but I never had an outlet for it in a way that could make a large impact on my life. I just picked up random crafty hobbies throughout the years like sewing my own dresses out of quilting cotton and going crazy with creative Christmas gift wrapping.

I taught myself to crochet (and ultimately knit) on youtube while my great grandmother Betty was in the hospital with a failing heart. All there was to do was to sit around and wait for doctors and tests to tell us what we already knew: we were losing the matriarch of our family. I needed something to focus on and since Betty had been the craftiest lady I’d ever known (she never crocheted or knit but she did extensive cross stitch, embroidery, and TONS of sewing – including my mom’s bridesmaids’ dresses!) so I wanted to pick up a hobby that made me feel more connected to her before she was gone.

I remember wondering the craft store in a daze, looking for something I could do while waiting at the hospital. Sewing was out, I couldn’t bring a sewing machine to the waiting room. Cross stitch seemed too focused, I needed something more repetitive. Then I saw a skein of Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick on an endcap. The elusive fisherman colorway was in my hands before I knew it. I didn’t know to read the yarn label to see what hook size to buy so I picked up a Susan Bates N hook just because it was gold.

I went home and watched hours of youtube videos and learned the basic stitches. Before I knew it I had a scarf going and I haven’t stopped crocheting since. Betty passed away about a week later and I crocheted on the drive to and from her funeral services. In some ways it feels like I’ll crochet forever just to keep a piece of her with me.

Fast forward about two years later, as I am in college studying English Literature and working hard at craft coffee shops around town, all the while crocheting constantly. I was even called “grandma” lovingly by my other young coworkers. When I got pregnant with my partner of about seven years, it was a surprise and an awakening. I realized two things pretty quickly:

I didn’t love the life I was working toward. I had no desire to move up through the ranks at the coffee shop and I remained focused on school. But I was studying to eventually become an english teacher, a dream that didn’t feel like it quite fit. Although I loved books and learning, I always dreamed of doing something very creative with my life. I secretly hoped that I would write the great American novel while teaching and eventually slip out of that confined job. Though those are lofty expectations with a baby on the way and only a half finished english degree.

I needed a good paying job, and fast. Minimum wage plus tips wasn’t going to cut it and while by husband was busy building his business from the ground up (now a larger-than-life printing business) I needed to try to fill in the gaps.

While I was pregnant I knew I had a shot. A short window of a few months that I could dedicate to trying to build something. When my fall semester ended, I left school and the coffee shop with a dream and a crazy work ethic. I told myself this:

If I can make enough money to buy our groceries by the time the baby comes in May then I will keep going with whatever this creative idea turns out to be. And if it ever stops making money I will go back to my normal life.

But what creative idea do I run with? What could I turn into an income?

I’d been reading a lot of crochet blog over the last couple of years since I’d begun crocheting but even more so after I got pregnant as I made things for the baby. I thought to myself that these men and women that write these blogs just started them one day. They didn’t have any more training than I do now so let’s see if I can do the same thing. I’d already been making up some of my own patterns when I couldn’t find what I wanted online so I felt it could work.

I created my crochet blog website, Sewrella.com, on Christmas Day of 2015 (did I mention my crazy work ethic? Who starts a business on Christmas Day??). I spent the first several weeks figuring out how to post a crochet blog post and write a pattern, though I still had a lot to figure out on my own that took YEARS to master.

I worked diligently at creating patterns for my crochet blog, from scarves to granny square tutorials, and even intricate blankets. I worked seven days a week and I created dozens of crochet blog posts by the time the baby came in May. During that month I made $800 from my crochet blog and it was determined that I could keep blogging as long as it kept making money to help support my family.

Sewrella has earned more money every month since then as I’ve continued to build a repertoire of blog posts, tutorials, and designs even working with big companies like Lion Brand Yarn, JOANN, and Michaels Stores.

Oh yeah, back to walking down the streets of New York with Lion Brand – this was a little over a year after I started blogging. For some reason they saw my granny squares and my tenacity and though I deserved a seat at that table. I’m still not sure what potential they saw back then, since I still had SO much to figure out. But they saw it and they knew where I could go.

Over the last few years this crochet blog has turned into something I never thought possible. It’s afforded me a comfortable financial life – something that seemed so far out of reach when I found out I was pregnant without a concrete plan – and it’s given me the creative freedom that feeds my soul. It has not been without hard, consistent work but MAN has it been worth it.

After sharing my story, I’ve been asked a lot of specific questions about how I got from A to Z. How I went from starting my crochet blog on Christmas Day four years ago to making a six-figure income. The dos and don’ts of writing a crochet pattern. How to work with brands. How to take beautiful photos. How to use social media in ways that will amplify my blog instead of just waste time.

I’ve written a comprehensive online course that answers all of these questions and lots more, The Sewrella Method. I talk in depth about the big wins and the even bigger misses so that you don’t have to figure it out alone.

There is also a wonderfully engaged online forum called the Neighborhood that’s a place to talk with like-minded students about course content as well as your own personal journeys. It’s a place to ask questions, share ideas, and work together toward our own common goal of being amazing crochet bloggers.

If you aren’t sure, no sweat! Check out the chapter previews and course quiz on the Sewrella Method website to see if it’s a good fit. We’ll be here when you’re ready.

Read through my inspiration, design process, and lots of info on the perfect yarn I chose. Or scroll on down for the free pattern.

Easy is an understatement!

This crochet triangle shawl/scarf/wrap does NOT get any easier. It’s a series of double crochet stitches with a few chain stitches to create that pointed triangle shape, and that’s it!

I love the simplicity of this design. Once I got past row 2 I had the pattern memorized – I turned on a good movie and zoomed through the project. It’s totally Netflix-able and easy to pick up and put down without having to refer back to the pattern.

The Inspiration + Design

I loved creating my ever popular Wishing Well Wrap crochet triangle shawl back in 2017 using Lion Brand Mandala Baby yarn. It’s been a crowd favorite ever since so I knew I needed to bring back a sister design.

That first crochet triangle shawl was a tad more intricate with alternating double crochets and rows of eyelet stitches. While beautiful, I wanted to create a simpler, more beginner friendly version.

I’ve created other crochet triangle shawl projects over the years like the Le Nuage Wrap and the Elle Convertible Shawl but this one might be my favorite!

A beginner friendly shape

A crochet triangle shawl seems intricate but it’s really not. This project is great for a beginner that’s worked simple scarves that are plain rectangles.

A triangle is just a step beyond that shape as it requires basic increases, but don’t let that scare you! The pattern itself is two lines of instruction and I even have a video tutorial to help you.

You got this!

The Yarn

I chose to return to the wide world of self-striping cake yarns for this pattern. These yarns have taken the craft world by storm over the last several years and can be found in stores and online nearly everywhere yarn is sold.

The great thing about these yarns is that they take all the color mixing guesswork out of making a multi-colored project. The cake yarns usually hold several shades of colors that are supposed to go together.

I think some colorways do a better job of this than others and my all-time favorite is the Mandala Sparkle in Nova that I used for this crochet triangle shawl. I love blush (seriously, I think my car would be blush if Subaru would answer my incessant requests for it) and this blend of blush, peach, light and smoky greys with lavender is just perfect.

Mandala Sparkle got that name from the thin strand of shimmering metallic thread running through the cake. It blends harmoniously with the yarn and you don’t notice it until the light hits your project just the right way. It’s subtle and gorgeous!

Other favorite cake yarn lines are the original Mandala, Mandala Baby, and the new Mandala Ombre all available from Lion Brand Yarn.

Read through my inspiration, design process, and lots of info on the perfect yarn I chose. Or scroll on down for the free pattern.

Easy is an understatement!

You know how you see a handmade piece of clothing online and your internal monologue immediately sounds like “woah, that’s complicated! I could never! Show me a scarf pattern!” I’m here to tell you that I felt that way for a good long time until I found the right patterns and tutorials for me.

This easy crochet cardigan is just about as simple as it could get – it’s made of T shaped panels that are sewn together, that’s it! There’s no fussy shaping or difficult elements that take this beyond an easy level pattern.

The Inspiration + Design

One of my patterns from earlier this year is constructed in a very similar fashion to this – it’s called the Cabana Top. That pattern is a pullover sweater style that is also made up of basic T shaped panels. It’s been a popular pattern here on the blog so I knew I wanted to make an easy crochet cardigan style sister pattern.

This pattern is only slightly different from the Cabana Top. Instead of two identical T shaped panels that are sewn together, we work one large T shaped panel for the back. Then two separate panels for the front that together make up that T shape. This mirrors the back only with an opening to make it a cardigan.

I maintained the same slightly lacy shoulder and top of sleeve of this easy crochet cardigan. However the yarn I used fills in those gaps quite a bit. If you wanted more stitch definition I would suggest using a yarn that isn’t quite as fluffy as the one I used.

The Yarn

I used Lion Brand’s LB Collection Chainette yarn for this easy crochet cardigan pattern. It’s been a smash hit ever since it came out last year! Once you feel it in your own hand, you’ll know why. This yarn is a luxurious blend of 70% baby alpaca, 18% virgin wool, and 12% polyamide for durability. Chainette is spun in a chain style structure (instead of plied like usual yarn is) and this means the stitches look more woven. It also means the yarn is very fluffy in that it allows air to pass through it and creates a lightweight feeling on the skin.

The color range in this yarn is one of my all-time favorites from any yarn brand. The colors are all heathered and a little rustic without being too muddy. They’re somehow both bright and soft at the same time. My favorites are the pink, cream, mustard and olive but really there isn’t a single color in the line that I don’t like!

I’ve made a couple of other patterns, apart from this easy crochet cardigan, with this yarn. These include my Knit Gwen Hat (that I’ve been wearing all season!) and my Crochet Elle Convertible Shawl.

Shop the Chainette yarn here.

The latest free tutorial here on the blog – Crochet Thermal Stitch!

Read below about the stitch details and the yarn I use to practice stitches or scroll on down for the free video tutorial.

Stitch Details

The thermal stitch is one of the thickest stitches I’ve come across – so much so that it looks woven! A variation on a simple single crochet, I still can’t believe how basic and mindless this stitch is to work – and with such stunning results.

I love using this stitch for my Double Thick Potholder pattern (find it by clicking here) but you could also get creative and use it for blankets, scarves, or other projects that need a little extra thickness.

The Yarn

I love practicing new stitches (and if you’re here reading this, I bet you do too!) but not just any yarn is great for trying out a new technique.

My secret to successful swatch practice? Using super bulky yarn! I always use Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick and Quick for stitch practice for a few reasons.

The category 6 super bulky yarn creates super bulky stitches – it’s easier to visualize how the stitch behaves and where I need to place my hook when I’m a little outside my comfort zone.

This yarn is very accessible. If you don’t already have some in your stash, it’s sold at almost every yarn store that sells Lion Brand yarn. I often find it on sale too!

It has great stitch definition. It’s harder to get familiar with a new stitch when you use yarn that’s super fuzzy or has too much texture to it. This one is perfect.

Crochet Potholders that are perfect for every kitchen!

I recently discovered a stitch called the thermal stitch and I’m in love! In playing with it I figured out an easy way to crochet this stitch simply and easily – check out the video tutorial here! I loved the texture and thickness of the stitch and immediately wanted to figure out a way to bring this woven look into my home with it’s own pattern.

After designing a WHOLE bunch of wearable pieces over the last couple of years I’ve been itching to work on some smaller projects as a creative palate cleanse. My little family also recently moved into a new house with a big gorgeous kitchen that was desperately lacking some warmth and texture. I love cozy spaces with layers of decor and this kitchen was looking a little… hallow.

So when I thought about how to bring the thermal stitch to life and what my home could use – a crochet potholder felt just right!

Crochet Potholders make the best gifts

These crochet potholders make great holiday or hostess gifts (they take about an hour to whip up!) – I’ll be giving sets of these along with my favorite cookbook tied up with a fluffy piece of scrap yarn. Gift giving season never looked so good – or was so utilitarian!

The Yarn

I had quite a few skeins of Lion Brand’s new cotton blend yarn Re-Up lying around the house and I loved them for these crochet potholders. The color lineup has some great neutrals to go with my home decor – that rustic grey has a bit of heather to it and is so pretty in person!

I held two strands of yarn together for this pattern to make the crochet potholders EVEN thicker – no way was I going to burn my hands on those hot pots coming out of the oven! I made one potholder each in the grey and cream colors and then made a third potholder holding one strand of each color together to achieve a marled look. I love the way all three look as a set.

I highly recommend using cotton yarn for this pattern – Re-Up is a wonderful option due to the color choice and the price point ($1.99 per skein!) but other cotton yarns would work too. Just make sure to stay away from acrylic or primarily polyester yarns to be sure hot pots and pans don’t melt the fibers. Cotton also performs better than other fibers when wet should you encounter a spill!

Read through my inspiration, design process, and lots of info on the perfect yarn I chose, or scroll on down for the free pattern.

The Inspiration + Design

Crochet accessories are what the transition from summer to fall is for! I’m having trouble letting go of the light, breezy shapes and colors of summer so I’m not putting them away just yet.

I’ve never designed a crescent shaped shawl before and I don’t think this one will be my last. It’s such a fun, delicate shape that is light and warm all at once.

I added heavy fringe to this shawl for added drama and style. It looks a little bare without the fringe and I love the statement it adds!

The Yarn + Kit

I blended two yarns together to make this piece and I love the way they mix and mingle. I held together a strand of Lion Brand Coboo in Pale Pink (a gorgeous, soft, drapey cotton bamboo blend yarn) and a strand of Lion Brand Summer Nights in Blue Lagoon (a lace weight sparkly variegated yarn with subtle blue and pink tones).

These two yarns played so nicely together and they create a really interesting, feminine look without any fuss – seriously, this entire pattern is just a one row repeat!!

Check out both of these yarns and get creative with all the mix and match color options – you can create so many styles just with these two palettes!

-This shawl is worked in one piece from the top down beginning with the top center. Simple 1 row repeat in turned rows until the desired length is achieved.

-Both yarns are held together throughout.

Crochet Glimmer Shawl

Hold 1 strand of each yarn together throughout.

Ch 33, sk 1 st

Row 1: 2 sc, 2 sc, sc until 2 sts remain, 2 sc, 2 sc, t <36>

Row 2: Ch 2, 2 Sc, 2 sc, blo sc until 2 sts remain, 2 sc, 2 sc, t <40>

Rep row 2 until you’ve finished 72 rows or until the deepest part of your shawl measures 18” from row 1 to last row and about 80” wide <320>

Finish off, weave ends.

BLOCKING

Blocking is necessary to get this shawl looking it’s best. Please complete this step before moving onto fringe!

Set up foam blocking mats or a couple of dry towels (that you won’t need for the next day or so) on a table, ironing board, or the floor.

Lay your dry shawl out on the blocking surface right side up.

With blocking pins or rustproof sewing pins, stretch and pin the shawl to make a soft crescent shape. Stretch and manipulate the shawl until you love the look.

With a clothing steamer or an iron on the steam setting, saturate the shawl with steam. It should feel damp to the touch.

Let dry overnight before removing pins and moving on to the fringe step.

BRUSHED FRINGE

Holding 1 strand of each yarn together-

Cut 2 pieces about 10 in. long <totaling 4 strands>

*Tip: speed up the process by setting up pins to wrap around and cut on your blocking mat!

Attach to the first stitch of the last row as follows. Fold all pieces in half together. Use your crochet hook to pull the fold of the yarn partially through the stitch. Pull tails of the fringe through the loop created. Tighten.

Rep fringe in every stitch across. This is tedious but imperative to the thick brushed fringe look.

Trim all fringe to be as even as possible, following the curve of your shawl. Go slow and always trim as little as possible.

The Inspiration + Design

This tutorial is for those folks that have always wanted to learn to knit and are ready to learn the basics! Instead of sitting down and teaching a few stitches (where all you walk away with is a weird little square of messy stitches) I decided to teach you how to make a whole scarf start to finish, even if you’ve never knit before!

This design is as simple as it gets, it’s a fun way to get acquainted with the craft and decide if it’s for you!

Make sure to check out the video below – it’s a great way to see exactly how I make this project even if you’re a complete beginner.

The Yarn + Kit

I collaborated with my favorite yarn brand for the materials for this project. Lion Brand Yarn is a name you’ll find all over my blog and for good reason! Their yarns are high quality and affordable (which is awesome, you’ll usually only find one attribute or the other!).

I decided on their Color Made Easy yarn for this project. It’s bulky weight which means the strand of yarn is thicker than a lot of other yarns on the shelf. Bigger yarn means bigger stitches which are easier to see when you’re just getting the hang of things. A lot of beginners find thicker yarn easier to hold in your hands at first while you figure out how to work yarn and two needles in tandem to make a scarf.

Lion Brand has graciously created a kit for this project on their website! You can find it HERE. The kit includes all the yarn you need to make the entire scarf, the exact knitting needles I used in the video, and a yarn needle (for sewing your scarf into an infinity loop if you so choose). There are great color options in this yarn to suit all tastes so check out the kit before you get started!

A lot of beginners find thicker yarn easier to hold in your hands at first while you figure out how to work a yarn and hook in tandem to make a scarf.

Lion Brand has graciously created a kit for this project on their website! You can find it HERE. The kit includes all the yarn you need to make the entire scarf, the exact hook I used in the video, and a yarn needle (for sewing your scarf into an infinity loop if you so choose). There are great color options in this yarn to suit all tastes so check out the kit before you get started!

This project is very beginner friendly with a comfortable, slouchy finished fit. Read on below about the inspiration and yarn details, or scroll on down for the free pattern.

The Inspiration + Design

I knit the original Gwen Hat in one of my favorite new yarns – Chainette from Lion Brand. But this weekend I’m headed to NYC for the LB Blogger Bash and we are holding a sip ‘n stitch event where I needed to supply an easy 1 skein pattern with Wool Ease Thick & Quick. Problem is: I realized I didn’t have one!! So I knit up a quick Gwen while watching La La Land the other night.

I’ve been loving a Knit 2 Purl 2 rib lately and the squishy base it gives to a project. Simple stockinette lets this yarn really shine and then a strong, dimensional decrease to close up the top of the hat adds a bit of subtle detail. I thought about adding a pom pom (this fluffy yarn makes such nice poms and there was plenty leftover from 1 skein) but I really love the look of those decreases at the crown so I left it alone!

I’ve sized this pattern for newborn babies all the way through adult mens – you’ll want to make Gwen hats for the whole family after you make the first

The Yarn

I used the good old standby, Wool Ease Thick & Quick for this pattern. This new color Carousel (I used it in my Storybook Hood & Pocket Scarf pattern here) is my new favorite. It’s got minty greens and pale pinks with pops of raspberry all pulled together with a soft grey spun throughout. So delicate and pretty!

Pattern Notes

-This hat pattern is written in several sizes, adult women’s will be bolded throughout as this is our most popular size (& the size pictured).

-You may sub out other super bulky weight yarns, but be mindful of your gauge.

-I will be using the magic loop technique to work the decreases at the crown of my hat. You may also use double pointed needles if you prefer.

-All stitch counts in < > are final stitch counts for the Rnd.
