The Inspiration + Design

This tutorial is for those folks that have always wanted to learn to knit and are ready to learn the basics! Instead of sitting down and teaching a few stitches (where all you walk away with is a weird little square of messy stitches) I decided to teach you how to make a whole scarf start to finish, even if you’ve never knit before!

This design is as simple as it gets, it’s a fun way to get acquainted with the craft and decide if it’s for you!

Make sure to check out the video below – it’s a great way to see exactly how I make this project even if you’re a complete beginner.

The Yarn + Kit

I collaborated with my favorite yarn brand for the materials for this project. Lion Brand Yarn is a name you’ll find all over my blog and for good reason! Their yarns are high quality and affordable (which is awesome, you’ll usually only find one attribute or the other!).

I decided on their Color Made Easy yarn for this project. It’s bulky weight which means the strand of yarn is thicker than a lot of other yarns on the shelf. Bigger yarn means bigger stitches which are easier to see when you’re just getting the hang of things. A lot of beginners find thicker yarn easier to hold in your hands at first while you figure out how to work yarn and two needles in tandem to make a scarf.

Lion Brand has graciously created a kit for this project on their website! You can find it HERE. The kit includes all the yarn you need to make the entire scarf, the exact knitting needles I used in the video, and a yarn needle (for sewing your scarf into an infinity loop if you so choose). There are great color options in this yarn to suit all tastes so check out the kit before you get started!

A lot of beginners find thicker yarn easier to hold in your hands at first while you figure out how to work a yarn and hook in tandem to make a scarf.

Lion Brand has graciously created a kit for this project on their website! You can find it HERE. The kit includes all the yarn you need to make the entire scarf, the exact hook I used in the video, and a yarn needle (for sewing your scarf into an infinity loop if you so choose). There are great color options in this yarn to suit all tastes so check out the kit before you get started!

I’m so excited to show you my latest project – the Crochet Storybook Hood + Pocket Scarf!

This project is very beginner friendly with simple afterthought hood + pockets. Read on below about the inspiration and yarn details, or scroll on down for the free pattern.

The Inspiration + Design

I’ve never been one to accessorize much, so when I do I like my pieces to be functional! This toddler mama doesn’t have the time or energy for accessorizing beyond utility.

So when I saw the new Carousel color of WET&Q, I knew I wanted to make a quick beginner friendly scarf that functioned on more than just the usual “keep my neck warm” level. This scarf comes with a hood and deep pockets (deep enough to hold a yarn cake or cell phone in each one!) that are stitched on at the end. So you can add one additional element or both depending on your preference.

I used the griddle stitch to give the scarf a little extra texture and I’m so happy with the result. It highlights all the colors in the Carousel inspired yarn and makes for a fun piece to add to any outfit.

The Yarn

Lion Brand’s old classic Wool Ease Thick & Quick has some new colors! I had to get my hands on this whimsical colorway called Carousel as soon as I saw it! Doesn’t it remind you of storybook lands and cotton candy?

Soft pink, minty green, natural cream, lilac and bubblegum blend together in soft pastel variegation that somehow doesn’t come off busy – it’s just feminine and pretty.

Weave ends and repeat pocket on other side.

Hood:

Fold scarf in half to find center, place stitch markers 8” from center on either side (16” total).

Row 1: Join yarn at first marker and Sc into the rough edge of the scarf to second marker. You should have about 26 stitches (it is most important that you don’t have too many stitches creating a ruffle or too few stitches creating gaps), Ch 1, t (26)

Row 2: *Sc, Dc; rpt from * across, Ch 2, t (26)

Rpt Row 2 until your hood piece measures about 9” (or 18 rows)

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Fold the hood piece in half lengthwise (hot dog style) to seam the last row of stitches together.

You should be stitching the 1st st to the last st, the 2nd st to the next to last, and so on along the last row of the hood piece.

Finish off, weave ends.

Edging:

Join yarn to any corner of the scarf piece.

Ch 1, Sc evenly around perimeter of the scarf (working 2 Sc in each of 4 scarf corners) and hood to make a cohesive, polished looking accessory.

Sl st to join, finish off, weave ends.

Tassels:

Make 4 large tassels using your favorite hard cover book as a guide. I like to use a book about 5” x 8” but always err on the side of larger. You can trim the tassel down if its too long for your liking.

Tie tassels securely to each of 4 corners of your scarf.

Pop on your finished accessory and enjoy!

Seriously, pinch me! Three years ago when I started this blog on a pregnancy whim I would have laughed in your face if you told me I’d be participating in a campaign like this. I’m blessed beyond belief and so grateful to every reader here (hi!). Your support is what’s gotten me to this point and I am filled to the brim with gratefulness. Now let’s talk about this yarn…

Note: Additional pieces pictured above will debut in the coming weeks! But if you’re impatient like me, all three kits are ready for you to shop below…

The Yarn

Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy yarn is a line that I’ve loved well over the last season or so. I’ve created several patterns already with it, including my popular Holiday Sweater Knit-a-Long! I’ve also made baby blankets and simple crochet hats with this yarn – so it’s safe to say I’ve been smitten for a while. It’s a category 5 bulky weight yarn (already hard to find great yarns in this category) in a stunning color lineup. It was so hard to narrow down my color choices for this mini collection because they’re all so gorgeous.

When Lion Brand asked me to collaborate on a campaign for Color Made Easy coming to Michaels Stores and Michaels.com I was elated! One of my favorite yarns of 2018 will now be available (as of January 25, 2019) in store and online at Michaels and I’ve cooked up some dreamy crochet and knitting projects you’re going to want to make.

My mini collection using this yarn consists of 2 crochet accessory projects and 1 knit sweater project and all three are available as kits from Lion Brand Yarn now! The first crochet accessory pattern is free below on the blog and the other two patterns will be making their debut here in a few weeks but if you want to make these projects immediately you need the kits from Lion Brand.

I had so much fun with the Millennial pink and Alabaster cream colorways of this yarn, they’re two of my favorites and I hope you love them as much as I do.

Collection Inspiration + Design

I created a three piece mini collection in Color Made Easy that consists of a Crochet Crown Braid Headband, Knit Betty Cardigan, and Crochet Vanilla Scarf (free pattern below). All three projects work up really quickly and are beginner/intermediate skill level friendly. These pieces look great individually or worn together and I can’t wait to see what colorways you choose for yours!

My designer friends that also work with Lion Brand (Alexi from Two of Wands, Jessica from Mama in a Stitch and Jess from Make & Do Crew) are all creating individual mini collections that speak to their own style and all their projects are so stunning! I knew that I wanted to stick to my romantically modern style and go with soft textures, feminine silhouettes, and craft patterns that are as easy to wear as they are to make.

I’m so excited to show you my latest project – the Crochet Fade Into You Scarf!

This project is very beginner friendly with a totally stunning result. Read on below about the inspiration and yarn details, or scroll on down for the free pattern.

The Inspiration + Design

I’ve been loving all of the recent ombré and fade trends in fashion over the last few years and always wanted to translate this into a handmade project. Instead of working with a yarn that would do this for me I wanted to have full control over the color palette. That means blending color stitch by stitch – sounds complicated but I think I found a way to get a really stunning look with minimal headache!

The Fade Into You Scarf is worked in the moss stitch (a simple combination of single crochet and chain stitches) that look like they interlock forming a more woven texture. Along with the color fade, this scarf looks very intricate and complex – nobody will know it was super easy to make, they’ll just be in love with the piece.

I chose to create the fade technique by holding my yarn double stranded. So there is no intricate color switching or carrying – you just change what yarns are held together as you move through the fade! So you start with 2 strands of the first color, then move to one strand of the first color and one strand of the second color, before moving to 2 strands of the second color.

You could use this technique to fade from one color to another never repeating or repeating randomly. I chose to work a “mirror fade” which is when you move through your color palette from colors 1-4, then backwards to return 4-1 and repeat the whole sequence over and over. We’ll go over this more in depth in the pattern below!

The Yarn

When Lion Brand yarn gave me a super secret preview of a new yarn of theirs I squealed with excitement. The yarn I used is called Beautiful You and boy, is it aptly named or what?! This category 2 lightweight yarn has incredible stitch definition due to a high twist, a luxe looking sheen, and the most gorgeous saturated colors you’ve ever seen.

The palette I chose to work with is made up of their Spanish Villa, Sugar Swizzle, Porcini, and Aquatic (top to bottom pictured below) colorways. I recommend choosing a couple of neutral colors and a couple of pigmented colors to give nice balance to your fade. Also, decide what your color story will look like. Will you work with pastels, jewel tones, or several shades of one color? Whatever you choose, make sure to look at all your colors lined up like this to make sure they look great together!

Using Beautiful You yarn was definitely the best part of this project – it glides so nicely on the hook and holding it double stranded works up so quick! Click HERE to check out this gorgeous new yarn (you won’t believe all the color options!)

The Kit

Lion Brand has put together a kit for this project that includes all the yarn you need and a printed copy of the entire pattern (yes, even those step by step photos!).

Pattern Notes

-This scarf pattern as written is made to fit average adult women but could be easily modified to fit children or men. Instructions for modifications to the pattern will be in italics throughout (yardage will vary when you alter the pattern).

-Entire pattern is worked holding a double strand of Beautiful You yarn, changing color combinations as you go to create a fade effect. When changing color, only one strand of yarn will change at a time. To minimize ends to weave later, only cut and join the one changing strand, not both. Be sure to change colors before chaining 2 and moving onto the next row. This will ensure a smooth transition.

-The moss stitch we use in this pattern can shrink up as you move along so be sure to block your scarf after it’s done to fix any tension issues at the start.

-Make note of what color you choose for Color 1, Color 2, Color 3, and Color 4. Take care not to mix these up when working so that your fade comes out looking like a fade!

The Inspiration + Design

If you know me at all, you know I love Gilmore girls. I’ve been watching the show since it first aired when I was in grade school, got the box set for Christmas the year after they cancelled the series and have been bingeing ever since. It’s unhealthy, I know every line before they say it. I could bore you with a list of my favorite quotes, characters, and outfits but let’s just talk about one for now: those sherpa lined coats.

Rory and Lorelai wore several jackets in the show but some of my favorites were those sherpa lined denim and corduroy ones in the early seasons. I love sherpa, although I own nothing fuzzy because I live in Florida. So instead of sweating it out in those cute teddy-bear-snuggle-feelin’ jackets – I made a little collar topper to toss on over my light denim jacket to get the Lorelei look! This version is much cooler and so easy to make.

When I sat down to design this lil pattern, I realized it really isn’t a design – it’s just a rectangle. There is absolutely nothing fancy here, unless you find rectangles fancy. I didn’t do any fussy shaping because why bother when this looks perfect as is? Done and done.

The Yarn

I’d thought about making a collar topper before with the crochet loop stitch (and I still might!) but I wasn’t in love with the idea. It was just kinda there. I really wanted the fuzzy fluffy look of Lorelei’s jacket. So when my pals at Lion Brand showed me a sneak peek at a new faux fur yarn they were developing, I knew this tutorial was in my future!

Go For Faux yarn is unlike anything else I’ve seen. It looks in the ball how it looks when worked up, maximum fluffiness! I only used one skein (with some leftover!) to make this collar topper and I’m in love with how it came out!

There are lots of gorgeous colorways of Go For Faux yarn, some colorful and some more natural like this Pomeranian colorway I used. Isn’t that just the cutest?! Any color would look great with denim, or layered over a heavier collared coat.

Abbreviations (US terms):

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

rpt – repeat

st(s) – stitch(es)

Skill Level:

Level 1 – beginner

Pattern Notes

-This pattern is one size fits most but can easily be adjusted to work well with any coat or size. Just change the number of chain stitches to alter the width of the collar and the number of rows of Sc to alter the length (that goes around your neck).

-Working with Go For Faux does require a bit of patience and a lint roller. This yarn will shed a bit while working with it, but I haven’t noticed a ton of fuzzing since the finished item has been worn. I’ve heard from LB that throwing your Go For Faux pieces on a low heat setting in the dryer can slough off some of the excess fuzz!

-The stitches in a fluffy yarn like this are hard to see, I’ll cop to that. However, you can feel the stitches fairly easily and make sure you count stitches as you go per row to make sure you always have 8! Luckily this piece is small and can get us started using fur yarn. The end result is so worth the couple of setbacks we may have.

-The hook and eye are crucial to this project working out – the collar won’t stay in place too well without them. However, you could substitute a 1-2″ button and pop it through the fabric as the stitches are fairly large. It will just be more visible than the hook and eye and may not give the illusion that it’s attached to the jacket. Additionally, you could affix your collar topper to a coat or jacket with velcro or fabric glue if you want it to stay there forever.

-Counts within <> are final stitch counts for the Rnd.

Ch 9

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch st and each across (8)

Rows 2-30: Ch 1, t, Sc in each st across (8)

Finish off and weave ends. Your piece should look like this!

Attach hook and eye with your scrap yarn in a similar color. I used Lion Brand Heartland yarn in Grand Canyon. You can see from my supplies photo below it’s not a match, but its in the same general color family as my Pomeranian Go For Faux yarn. That’ll do!

Sew the hook to one of the short sides at the left corner. Take care to sew around each foot of the hook several times to ensure it’ll stay put.

Sew the eye to the other short side of the piece, also at the left side. Sew securely.

Weave all ends by burying them in your Go For Faux stitches. Or knot and tie off because it’ll be hidden in the fur.

The Design

You know how there are those friends and family members that you just don’t know what to make for them? Or what to buy? What will they like, dangit?! I’ve got the answer for you – it’s the University Scarf. And guess what?! You’ve actually got plenty of time to make these before the winter holidays are over!

After the wild (albeit, unexpected) success of my Brooklyn Ridge Crochet Hat pattern (a super simple hat made from a rectangle) I knew I needed to create a scarf in a similar fashion. One simple stitch, simple stripes for a little flair, and warm, ribbed texture.

I teamed up with my friends at JOANN to bring you the most fool-proof gift idea for the holidays – girls & guys of all ages love this scarf, so just make sure you crochet lots of them!

Make it!

I made my scarf with Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick yarn from JOANN – and let me tell ya, there’s nothing like the squishy texture of this yarn! It’s an old stand by for a reason.

There are SO many gorgeous color combinations to choose from in this yarn, you could use a classic soft colors like Blossom, Charcoal, or Fig – the variegated yarns like Hudson’s Bay, Spice Market, and Fossil are favorites too!

If you make this scarf pattern for anyone attending university, try matching yarn choices to a school color – or carry out this idea for an Alumni. I can’t wait to see how yours comes out!

It’s also worth noting that I made my scarf in about 3 hour long episodes of TV. You’ll be able to crank these out in a jiffy!

The Crochet Color Pooling Scarf is a pattern I designed way back during my first autumnal blogging season. I’m bringing it back in a new fall feature this year!

You might remember this pattern from when I first posted it here on the blog a couple of years ago. This post holds the same pattern, with a bit of an elevated presentation!

Back in the old color pooling scarf post, you may remember that it was a straight scarf pattern with multicolored pom poms on the ends. I’ve simplified the scarf to be more wearable by removing the poms and sewing the ends together to form an infinity style loop.

You can wear the loop draped long and lengthy or you can wrap it around twice for a thicker, warmer accessory.

SWEATER PATTERNS I LOVE (& you should too)

Color Pooling Heaven

I chose to use Lion Brand Yarn’s Color Waves yarn – after the color pooling craze went wild online a couple of years ago, I noticed no one was trying to pool color with LB yarn. (If you have no idea what I’m talking about when I say color pooling, don’t be afraid. It’s just a fancy term for intentionally working with the color changes in a variegated yarn to create this plaid-like pattern. Don’t worry, I’ll teach ya!).

With color pooling, the yarn does all the work for you. I’ve got a lot more details in my original post on this written out for you, but the video below will explain everything in great detail!

I did notice that it looks like LB is phasing out the awesome Color Waves yarn and it’s no longer available in the Playground colorway I used for my scarf (or find it HERE on Amazon!). They do however still have some Rainbow left which I also tested and pools nicely! You can substitute with many other yarns and still get them to pool – you just need a variegated yarn with fairly abrupt color changes and 10-12″ lengths of each color.
Hi! I’m Breann from Hooked on Homemade Happiness where I love to share modern and stylish crochet patterns. There’s nothing like making your own clothing and accessories and being able to say, “I made this!”

This Boho Fringe Cowl is fun and full of fringe! The design is more open and airy than a winter cowl, so it’s perfect for spring and even summer. I like to match it with a plain tee with some jeans to add some extra fun to my outfit, but it would also be super cute with a sundress and some boots.

I used Caron Simply Soft in Taupe for this cowl for it’s sleek and shiny look, but any worsted weight (category 4) yarn would work perfectly. I really love adding fringe to a lot of my spring and summer makes. This cowl looks great without the fringe, too! It’s totally optional. Either way, you’re going to have one seriously cute cowl.

So two things happened this week:

1. I decided to finally try this finger crochet thing. If you haven’t heard of it, don’t feel too behind – it’s been floating around on the internet only for a little while. I’d seen lots of chunky, cuddly, squishy things made with this technique and I waited long enough – the time is now!

2. I realized I had a pile of chunky beautiful yarn scraps hanging around from when I made THESE granny squares for the Craft Yarn Council. So what do we do with a big ole pile of beautiful yarn scraps? Make a scrappy scarf of course!

So I gathered my pile of pastel Red Heart Grande Metallic yarn and tried out this finger crochet thing.

Basically the premise behind this technique is to replace the crochet hook with one index finger. A great solution for when you’ve forgotten your hook out and about, or just want to try out a new technique – I found it to be super fun! (I’ve also heard that some have luck learning to crochet this way. But I think that’s kind of akin to learning to “play guitar” on a rock band video game. Not the same)

ANYWHO

{I get so off topic. I’m sorry.}

If you’re new to the finger crochet game – fret not! I have a whole slew of photos below to help you out.

This pattern is the easiest I’ve ever written I think. No hook. Repeat the same row over and over until desired length. No nonsense here. Just straight up crochetin’.

Try out this fun style – I know this chunky scarf will be your best friend this fall!

PATTERN:
Materials:
-Red Heart Grande Metallic in every colorway offered (Vista, Mulberry, Wisteria, Glacier, Smoke, Straw) – (about a half skein of each – if using whole skeins, you need 3)
-Index finger
-Extra large tapestry needle
