The Inspiration + Design

I started hand dyeing yarn back in 2017 and I fell in love quickly. I started a business selling our hand dyed yarn and called it Sewrella Yarn! We open our store once a month for themed collections on the 15th of every month and it always sells out fast! (Follow us on instagram here to stay caught up). We have so much fun creating themed colorways around different collection ideas like Hocus Pocus at Halloween, Gilmore Girls (the TV show), and Disneyland to name a few.

I had some partial skeins of a bunch of colorways laying around and wanted to whip up a hat pattern to use them. I loved the play on words with a “dip dye” look and bonus – I could use up my stash!

I chose one of my favorite stitches (back loop only half double crochet) to get a more stretchy fabric that looks and behaves more similarly to knitting. This makes a super warm and comfy crochet hat!

The perfect crochet hat for anyone – beginners included!

This hat is made by crocheting a rectangle and sewing it together, that’s it! There’s a not-so-fancy color change that I’ll teach you in a video but otherwise, this crochet hat is the easiest thing I’ve made… and just look at the payoff!

I seriously don’t know if I’ve ever made anything that was quite as satisfying as this. This crochet hat looks and feels store bought, or even better and it was so simple and mindless.

Sizes for you and everyone you know

I did the math for ya and the crochet hat pattern is available in all sizes, from preemie babies to large adults! I’m wearing the Adult Small and my son is wearing the Child size (he’s almost 4 but has an enormous noggin).

Just measure the head circumference of the recipient (if you’re able) and choose the size closest to that measurement via the chart in the crochet hat pattern below. You can also make the size that the recipient falls into naturally, the sizing is based on standard measurements from the Craft Yarn Council.

That magic mid-row color change

The technique used to create this sharp color change is a mid-row technique that’s so much simpler than it looks. All I do is carry the yarn up the back in the same way for each row and there is a special way I do the yarn over. Watch the color change video in the crochet hat pattern below to see how I do it!

High end + Affordable

I made these crochet hats using odds and ends of yarn from my stash but you will need to choose two yarns that go well together!

In each of the hats pictured I used our own hand dyed yarn for one color and a more affordable Lion Brand Yarn for the other color. The end result is a wool blend, super soft hat that didn’t cost a fortune to make. One could certainly make an entire hat of this style in high end yarn or more affordable yarn and it would be just as gorgeous.

When you make your crochet hat, use the tips below on looking at yardage to determine what yarns will blend well together in this way. Get creative and use up some of your stash and if you’re able, think about supporting an artisanal hand dyer (when used for one color of the hat, one skein of hand dyed yarn could make two or more hats, depending on what sizes you make).

Yarn + Substitution

I used a blend of Lion Brand’s Touch of Cashmere in Gull Grey and some of my own hand dyed yarn from Sewrella Yarn (an older colorway called Lodge) in my son’s hat. I used Lion Brand’s LB Collection Merino Yak Alpaca in Dusty Pink and Sewrella Yarn yarn in Marshmallow for my own hat. All are Category 3 Light weight and of comparable gauge.

A note on substituting yarns and blending yarns for this project: there is a lot of variation in the yarn industry within the world of worsted weight category 4 weight yarn. The best way I know to compare yarns of different origins, fiber contents, and brand are to look at the yardage per gram. On the yarn label for any yarn (from a big box store or from an independent dyer) the yardage for the ball or skein is listed.

Let’s use my adult hat as an example since that’s the one I wrote the pattern instructions for:

The Merino Yak Alpaca I used from Lion Brand is an 50 gram ball with 126 yards. 126/50=2.52 yards per gram.
The Handmade Home Fibers hand dyed yarn is a 100 gram skein with 231 yards. 231/100=2.31 yards per gram.
2.52-2.31=0.21 yards per gram difference

I try to make sure any yarns I’m blending within one project like this are absolutely no more than 0.5 yards per gram difference from each other. The lower this number is, the closer these comparative yarns will be in gauge, resulting in a seamless finished project!

-See chart within pattern below to determine your number of foundation chains (A), after how many stitches to change color (B), row stitch count (C), number of total row repeats (D).

-The yarn recommendations in the materials list match my hat and the pictured hat is the Small Adult size.

-Ch 2 at beginning of each row does not count as a stitch.

-Use light weight yarns following the yardage chart below. See “Yarn & Substitution” section above for additional guidance.

DIP DYE CROCHET HAT

With Color 1 Ch A changing to Color 2 after B chs, sk 2 sts.

Row 1: Hdc across changing to Color 1 when you come to it, turn <C>

Row 2: Ch 2, blo hdc across changing to Color 2 when you come to it, turn <C>

Row 3: Ch 2, blo hdc across changing to Color 1 when you come to it, turn <C>

Repeat rows 2-3 until you’ve finished D rows.

Finish off leaving long tails for sewing.

Assembly

Fold rectangle with short sides together making a rough square shape.

Seam Color 1 section foundation chain and last row with a mattress stitch. Weave ends.

Seam Color 2 section foundation chain and last row with a mattress stitch. Continue to crown gathering without breaking yarn..

Gather the crown by sewing a whip stitch around the selvedge edge through every other row as pictured. Pull yarn to cinch the crown after sewing all the way around. Secure by sewing across the cinched top a few times. Weave ends.

Turn hat right side out and cuff brim. You may sew in place but I didn’t find it necessary.

Attach faux fur or yarn pom pom to center of cinched top.

The Inspiration + Design

I knit the original Gwen Hat in one of my favorite new yarns – Chainette from Lion Brand. But this weekend I’m headed to NYC for the LB Blogger Bash and we are holding a sip ‘n stitch event where I needed to supply an easy 1 skein pattern with Wool Ease Thick & Quick. Problem is: I realized I didn’t have one!! So I knit up a quick Gwen while watching La La Land the other night.

I’ve been loving a Knit 2 Purl 2 rib lately and the squishy base it gives to a project. Simple stockinette lets this yarn really shine and then a strong, dimensional decrease to close up the top of the hat adds a bit of subtle detail. I thought about adding a pom pom (this fluffy yarn makes such nice poms and there was plenty leftover from 1 skein) but I really love the look of those decreases at the crown so I left it alone!

The Yarn

I used the good old standby, Wool Ease Thick & Quick for this pattern. This new color Carousel (I used it in my Storybook Hood & Pocket Scarf pattern here) is my new favorite. It’s got minty greens and pale pinks with pops of raspberry all pulled together with a soft grey spun throughout. So delicate and pretty!

Crown Shaping:

Note: Change to working in magic loop or on DPNs as needed.

Next Rnd: Knit each st around placing a stitch marker every 6 (8, 10, 12) sts

You should have 4 st markers total including the marker at the beginning of your Rnd.

Decrease Rnd: K2tog, *K to 2 sts before marker, K2togTBL, sm, K2tog; Rpt from * 2 times more, K to last 2 sts, K2togTBL <16, 24, 32, 40>

Next Rnd: K each st around <16, 24, 32, 40>

The Yarn

Lion Brand clued me into a new yarn of theirs before it was even released and let me tell you guys – it’s about 10x as fluffy in person! The yarn is called Chainette due to its inventive chain construction (instead of the usual twist we see in yarn). There is no splitting on your needles and this yarn really floofs up after it’s worked. It’s 70% Alpaca (!!!), 20% Virgin Wool and 10% Polyamide for durability.

My favorite thing about Chainette is the color palette! There are so many gorgeous hues, it really is hard to choose what color to make your hat. I worked with Mustard for my hat but I’m thinking my husband has a denim hat coming his way and an olive one for Parker! Basically I will have a Gwen hat on my needles from now until forever, amen.

The Yarn

Lion Brand’s Color Made Easy yarn is a line that I’ve loved well over the last season or so. I’ve created several patterns already with it, including my popular Holiday Sweater Knit-a-Long! I’ve also made baby blankets and simple crochet hats with this yarn – so it’s safe to say I’ve been smitten for a while. It’s a category 5 bulky weight yarn (already hard to find great yarns in this category) in a stunning color lineup. It was so hard to narrow down my color choices for this mini collection because they’re all so gorgeous.

When Lion Brand asked me to collaborate on a campaign for Color Made Easy coming to Michaels Stores and Michaels.com I was elated! One of my favorite yarns of 2018 will now be available (as of January 25, 2019) in store and online at Michaels and I’ve cooked up some dreamy crochet and knitting projects you’re going to want to make.

My mini collection using this yarn consists of 2 crochet accessory projects and 1 knit sweater project and all three are available as kits from Lion Brand Yarn now! I had so much fun with the Millennial pink and Alabaster cream colorways of this yarn, they’re two of my favorites and I hope you love them as much as I do.

Collection Inspiration + Design

I created a three piece mini collection in Color Made Easy that consists of a Crochet Crown Braid Headband (free pattern below), Knit Betty Cardigan, and Crochet Vanilla Scarf. All three projects work up really quickly and are beginner/intermediate skill level friendly. These pieces look great individually or worn together and I can’t wait to see what colorways you choose for yours!

My designer friends that also work with Lion Brand (Alexi from Two of Wands, Jessica from Mama in a Stitch and Jess from Make & Do Crew) are all creating individual mini collections that speak to their own style and all their projects are so stunning! I knew that I wanted to stick to my romantically modern style and go with soft textures, feminine silhouettes, and craft patterns that are as easy to wear as they are to make.

Finish off, weave ends.

Neck Band

Line up all pieces with right side facing you and foundation chain on the left side.

Join yarn to furthermost right piece’s edge.

Row 1: Sl st loosely evenly across edges of all 4 pieces, Ch 2, t

Row 2: Hdc in each st across, t

Row 3: Sl st loosely, in each st across, Ch 2 t

Rpt Rows 2-3 once more

Finish off, weave ends.

Braiding

With right side facing you and Neck Band at the top of the work, braid your strands according to the diagram below.

Once you’ve finished braiding all the way down, adjust your braid until you’re happy with the placement.

Repeat Neck Band portion of this pattern at the end of your Headband, taking care not to undo the braid you’ve made.

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Whip stitch last row of each Neck Band section together to secure headband in place. Weave ends.

Pop on your finished accessory and enjoy!

I’ve made what might be the best beginner easy crochet hat pattern you’ve ever seen – the Brooklyn Ridge Easy Crochet Hat – free pattern!

The Design

While vacationing in North Carolina last week the weather was a comfortable 60 degrees… until we drove up into the foggy blue ridge mountains and it dropped to about 40 degrees in a matter of minutes! Brrrr!

All I had with me was the beginning of a chunky scarf WIP (work in progress) stuffed in my bag and a pair of near-frostbitten ears. I knew I needed a easy crochet hat and fast! I hoped my scarf was the right size to sew up and pop on my head, but let’s be honest – even if it wasn’t, it was better than nothing.

In the dark on the side of a gloomy mountain I worked a few more rows to make the strip of fabric wrap around my head, slip stitched it into a tube, sewed up the top and hoped for the best.

When I finally got back to the cabin & looked in the mirror, I loved the way this makeshift easy crochet hat looked! It had enough length to fit comfortably and pull down over my ears with enough slouch in the back for my taste. It was meant to be!

Sizing / Modifying

This easy crochet hat pattern is written tutorial style with tons of photos to assist you in modifying the design to fit any noggin. Seriously! From newborns to husbands with large craniums (like mine, lol!) you can custom fit this pattern with just a measuring tape and some kindergarten math.

Make sure you can measure the circumference of your easy crochet hat recipient’s head (or use the standard head circumference chart given by the Craft Yarn Council here)

You can also modify the stitch you use! In my cream colored sample I used a Sc and in the butterscotch sample I used Hdc. As long as your easy crochet hat rectangle measures correctly for your head size, you can use virtually any stitch you want – the possibilities are really endless!

The Yarn

I chose to use Lion Brand’s new Color Made Easy yarn for this project – or should I say it chose me? I’m working on a few new designs with this yarn so I brought loads of it along on my trip and it was sheer coincidence that it was the absolute perfect choice for this project!

I love this yarn for several reasons – the color choices are some of my favorite of all LB yarns. I made my first sample on our trip in Alabaster and made my second sample in Kombucha (the most perfect toasted butterscotch color you’ve ever seen!). Some of my other favorites are Millenial, Kingfisher, Basalt, and Avocado.

I also love how much yardage is in one of these skeins. It’s a category 5 bulky weight (another plus) with 200g of yarn. I used about 110g for each of my easy crochet hats so you could easily get an adult and a kids size easy crochet hat out of one ball!

Pattern Notes

-This easy crochet hat pattern as written is made to fit average adult women and has a lot of stretch. Instructions for modifications to the pattern will be in italics throughout.

–MODIFY: You can easily modify it to fit any size head – just follow the measurement guidelines at the beginning of the pattern below. Always err on the side of more sts across/hat length as you can fold the brim if its too long but it’s hard to adjust a hat that’s too short!

-I even used different stitches in my different samples – alabaster uses Sc in place of all Hdc sts (kombucha) – I just made sure to stay true to those measurements explained in the pattern and it came out almost the same but with smaller, tighter ridges.

-This pattern can be altered to use worsted weight yarn or bulky weight yarn as long as you meet the rectangle measurements.

Brooklyn Ridge Easy Crochet Hat

Measuring:

Head Circumference: wrap a measuring tape around the widest part of your head. Subtract 4″ for a snug beanie fit.

My measurement – 21.5 – 4 = 17.5″

Length: measure from the center crown of your head to the earlobe. Add 2″ if you’d like a folded brim (I did not).

My Measurement – 9″

Hat Rectangle

Ch 30 (or number of sts to reach “length” measurement above + 2)

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd Ch st from hook and each st across, Ch 2, t (28)

Row 2: BLO Hdc in each st across, regular Hdc in last st, Ch 2, t (28)

Rpt Row 2 until you’ve finished 35 Rows or 17.5″ (or number of Rows to reach “head circumference” measurement above)

Your hat rectangle should now measure about 9 x 17.5″ (or length x head circumference)

Last Row: Holding Row 1 to your last Row worked, sl st loosely in each st across working through both layers of fabric to form a large hat tube.

Finish off leaving a long tail (about 18″ long)

Cinch: With a tapestry needle, sew your long tail through the end of each Row around the edge of the tube with a whip stitch.

Pull your tail taught and weave ends sewing back and forth over the closure a few times. Knot both tails to secure and flip your hat inside out.

Embellish: Sew on pom poms, appliques, or fold the brim if you like that sort of thing. You’re done!

Handmade Home Fibers

In case you haven’t already heard, my husband and I started hand dyeing our own yarn right in our kitchen! We spend months researching and practicing before launching the biz to the public last April and we’ve been having so much fun hanging together, dyeing a whole lot of yarn.

-Hat is made by first working the ribbed brim in a long strip of turned rows (which is turned up in these photos), joined to form a loop, and the body of the hat is worked up from the brim in continuous rounds, decreased at the top to cinch together with a pom pom added on top at the end.

-You will have enough yarn in 1 hank of Handmade Home Fibers yarn to make the entire hat and pom pom!

Crochet Avery Hat

Ribbed Brim:

Ch 8

Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and each st across (6)

Row 2: Ch 2, t, BLO Hdc in each Hdc across (6)

Rpt Row 2 until your strip measures 18 (19, 20, 21, 22, 24)” making sure to finish with an odd number of Rows.

Bring Row 1 to your last row without twisting the strip.

Sl st in each st across, working through each stitch in your last Row and the foundation Ch sts of Row 1

Body of Hat:

Ch 1, turn to work along rough edge of ribbed brim

Row 1: Sc in the edge of each Row all the way around, finishing with an odd number of stitches

Row 2: Sc, *Dc, Sc, Dc; rpt from * around

Row 3: Dc, *Sc, Dc, Sc; rpt from * around

Rpt Rows 2-3 until your hat measures 5 (5.25, 5.5, 5.75, 6, 7.5)” from Row 1 of Body of Hat.

Decrease the crown:

Row 1: Dc, Dc2tog in remaining sts around

Rpt Row 1 1 (2, 2, 3, 3, 4) more times.

Finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Weave tail through sts of last row and pull to tighten. Weave ends.

Make a Pom Pom about 3″ in size using your favorite pom pom method (I use the Clover USA pom pom makers).

Leave long tails and sew over last row of your hat and weave ends.

The Parisienne Beret is the hat of european dreams! With simple stitches and all-in-one construction, this hat works up fast and is sure to please all the girls in your life!

I am always inspired by vintage fashion and feminine romance, so this Beret was a cold weather must-have! I upped the romance factor even more by cross stitching a simple heart on the side of my hat. You could get really creative with embellishments here and stitch on 3D flowers (like my crochet roses), other appliques (my crochet hearts), or just leave your simple beret bare!

The Yarn

Lion Brand’s Touch of Alpaca yarn is one of my favorite cold weather yarns! It has a slight fuzz from the addition of luxe alpaca to the basic acrylic base yarn. The color selection from this line of yarn is one of my favorites offered by Lion Brand, and this purple aster color is gorgeous!

I also used Lion Brand’s DIYarn mini skeins to make the cross stitched heart on my hat in the color Cream. These little skeins are perfect for accents like this one and are very inexpensive for the quality!

Let’s talk about bullying.

It’s an uncomfortable subject, right? Usually something happened in our past that’s a sore spot for heartache. Sometimes it’s in school, sometimes it’s at home, sometimes you don’t remember where the bullying happened you just know this – you felt awful.

I know that for me, all the bullying happened in the mirror. That’s right, I definitely bullied myself. You can see from any photos of me all over this website that I’m not runway model size. I have cellulite, I have hips and thighs, I have boobs that sag, and stretch marks that won’t go away. I have chub on my back that never looks slim in a lot of dresses.

And 13 year old me would have been mortified to write this on the internet. How dare I talk about cellulite publicly!!! The audacity!!!

But lookie here, gather round kids: HUMANS ARE HUMANS.

Little dimples in our skin do not define us, wide hips are no sign of shame, and breasts that hang past where my abs “should” be are a thing of pride.

We live in these bodies every day, we’ll never know another body than the one you’re sitting in. So if you have long lanky limbs and wish for curves, that’s okay. If you have jiggle and wish for washboard abs, that’s okay. Feel your feelings, but recognize that you’re human.

It’s taken me a couple of decades of shaming myself, feeling guilty for my curves, and being embarrassed by my body to finally come to this realization:

I refuse to keep bullying myself. I REFUSE.

This proclamation didn’t mean I was going to look any different tomorrow – but what would change is my character.

I’ve always said that I value someone’s character, their kindness, far beyond what they look like. I don’t care if you wear Gucci when you aren’t a nice person. Give me a sweetheart in Goodwill hand-me-downs every damn day. But I wasn’t valuing the kindness I show myself above what I look like. I was a victim of my own mirror-bullying.

I had to change my whole way of thinking. I had to look at my body as a vessel that carries my mind and my spirit, instead of my worth.

I still work everyday to think this way, and to be confident in it. Even when my thighs are too thick for my overalls.

The Campaign

Maybe you can think of a time that you’ve been bullied by another person, but I bet a lot of the men and women reading this have bullied themselves a time or two. Did I catch ya feeling the feels??

I hope you will join me in working to end this toxic cycle. The world is a tough, unforgiving place. Let’s have a little more patience and kindness within ourselves.

Some of the most affected by self-bullying are young girls. I know that I started worrying about my figure around age six. I remember going to an open call modeling audition and worrying about the macaroni and cheese I’d had for dinner. This kind of thinking isn’t a six year old’s nature, it’s the product of a world outside expecting her to look like a photoshopped utopian version of herself.

I hope you’ll talk to the young girls in your life about the importance of recognizing their own internal bully and quieting that bully.

-Make the twisted headband, then make the beanie topper and sew together as pictured below.

Crochet Knot Beanie Hat

Twisted Headband

Row 1: Ch 151, Sc in 2^nd ch from hook and across, Ch 2, t (150)

Row 2: Hdc in each Sc across, Ch 1, t (150)

Row 3: Sc in each Hdc across, Ch 2, t (150)

Rows 4-8: Rpt Rows 2 -3

Finish off yarn, weave ends.

Holding center of headband strip at the back of head/nape of the neck, pull two ends forward toward your face.

Twist headband strip so that they cross right over left or counter clockwise.

Twist again in the counter clockwise motion. Switch hands so your right hand now holds the left end and vice versa.

Fold ends back down to the headband.

Secure with stitch markers taking care to make sure the headband fits comfortably and snugly.

Remove headband and with scrap yarn sew the ends into place with a running stitch.

Turn headband inside out and try it on to ensure fit.

The weather is warming and I’ve got summer on my mind – so I had to make a chic accessory for sunny days: The Crochet June Sun Hat!

I won’t beat around the bush, this hat is amazing. It uses just 2 skeins of yarn (really 1.5 – you could easy get 2 hats from 3 skeins) and NO other funky materials to keep that brim stiff. No fussy wires, cords, starch or glue. Just good old fashioned crochetin’.

This hat works up fast with the bulky category 5 weight yarn I used, but don’t let the weight fool you – this hat is so lightweight and breezy for when that sun is beaming down on ya. Style it with your favorite swimsuit and sandals, or accessorize gal’s brunch with a pretty sundress. I love a piece as versatile as this one!

Add flair to suit your style to really personalize this piece, or leave it as is! You could add colorful pom poms with other scrap yarn, adorn it with embroidery, iron on a patch, or just tie a feminine ribbon around the crown.

I chose to use Lion Brand’s new Rewind yarn. It’s a blend of polyester and viscose fibers which is most unusual – and totally perfect for my June hat. It’s a tape style yarn, which means that the orientation of the strand is flat and skinny, like a piece of tape. It’s so hard to communicate the feel of this unique yarn with words and photos – it really is something you have to feel to believe!

The best way I can think to describe it is: really really thin velvet and wax paper had a baby. And it was Rewind yarn. It’s the most innovative fiber I’ve ever felt!

-Increase rounds read “Inc, Sc, rep around” whereas you’ll repeat Inc, Sc, Inc, Sc, Inc, Sc, etc until you’ve finished the round.

-Be sure to check gauge! You don’t want your hat to come out too large or too small.

June Sun Hat

*Note: Round 39 will be tight to work in but it really makes the edging of the brim much more sturdy!

Break yarn and finish off.

Brim Stabilization Stitches

Join yarn to the small space between the first and second stitches in Round 26 of your hat. Pull up a loop onto your hook.

Surface Sl st into the space between the next two sts in Round 26. (see the video above if you’ve never worked surface sl st before!)

Continue slip stitching along every stitch and every Round to Round 37 following the natural spiral of the un-joined rounds.

Finish off, weave all ends.
