Read through my inspiration, design process, and lots of info on the <a href="https://www.sewrellayarn.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">perfect yarn</a> I chose. Or scroll on down for the free pattern.</p>

<h2>The Inspiration + Design</h2>
<p>I dyed some yarn for my most recent <a href="https://sewrellayarn.com/">Sewrella Yarn</a> hand dyed collection in the gorgeous colors Cruise and Lido Deck, they were just sitting on my shelf, begging to be used for something as stunning as they are. I loved dyeing these colors and I knew a two-sided, simple stitch blanket would be the perfect thing for them. Worked up on our Classic Bulky base yarn made the blanket squishy and luxurious with unbelievable drape.</p>
<p>This cruise crochet blanket is the epitome of luxe. It&#8217;s an heirloom piece for sure! I&#8217;ll just say this: if there&#8217;s a blanket you should splurge on and invest time in making, <em>it&#8217;s this one</em>.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-9458" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_2796.jpg" alt="" width="1638" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_2796.jpg 1638w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_2796-240x300.jpg 240w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_2796-819x1024.jpg 819w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_2796-120x150.jpg 120w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_2796-768x960.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/IMG_2796-1229x1536.jpg 1229w" sizes="(max-width: 1638px) 100vw, 1638px" /></p>
<h2>Color Pooling made easy</h2>
<p>You&#8217;ll notice in the photos of this crochet blanket pattern that the variegated yarn pools in a way that looks like waves or really soft, flowing striping. That&#8217;s not due to any fancy counting or technique, that&#8217;s just how our yarn works up when crocheted.</p>
<p>We work the right side of the blanket in one color and the wrong side in another color to get a two-toned effect and this helps the color to pool in the wavy look that you see here. You could get a similar effect using any of our pour dyed hand dyed yarn colorways.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-9442 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-03.jpg" alt="crochet blanket using hand dyed yarn and color pooling" width="1366" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-03.jpg 1366w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-03-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-03-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-03-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-03-768x1151.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-03-1025x1536.jpg 1025w" sizes="(max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px" /></p>
<h2><a href="https://sewrellayarn.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sewrella Yarn</a></h2>
<p>I started <a href="https://sewrellayarn.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">hand dyeing my own yarn</a> over two years ago and it&#8217;s now a flourishing business that I absolutely love working on! We host monthly collections, each one focused on a theme complete with variegated and solid colored yarns, speckled yarns and all different base yarns including the bulky yarn you see pictured here.</p>
<p>We also incorporate teas and house-made wool wash that are specific to each collection. Special edition teas that connect to the theme like key lime margarita in the summer and pumpkin chai in the fall to taste while scented wool wash connects a sense of smell to the collection like coconut grove or warm amber staycation.</p>
<p>Follow Sewrella Yarn on Instagram or get on our email list on the <a href="https://sewrellayarn.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Sewrella Yarn Website</a> to stay up-to-date when new collections launch!</p>
<h2>One blanket, so many sizes</h2>
<p>Although I am in love with this crochet blanket in the baby size, I have written this pattern to work for blankets of just about any size!</p>
<p>Within the pattern below you&#8217;ll find a table of blanket sizes that are included in the pattern as well as their measurements and the yardage required to make them (provided you&#8217;re using the yarn I used or a similar worsted weight yarn)</p>

<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-9451" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-12.jpg" alt="" width="1366" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-12.jpg 1366w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-12-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-12-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-12-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-12-768x1151.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/cruise-blanket-12-1025x1536.jpg 1025w" sizes="(max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px" /></p>
<h2><strong>Yarn + Substitution</strong></h2>
<p>It&#8217;s easy to make this blanket in another chunky yarn &#8211; like Lion Brand <a href="https://shrsl.com/2dwv7" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Color Made Easy</a>. This yarn is really widely available for a great price in a really pretty color palette. Any other category 5 bulky blanket could also be substituted fairly easily &#8211; even hand dyed yarn from other independent dyers too!</p>

<p><strong style="font-size: 16px;">&#8211;</strong><strong style="font-size: 16px;">See chart above to choose the size blanket you&#8217;d like to make!</strong></p>
<p><strong style="font-size: 16px;">-See chart within pattern below to determine your number of foundation chains (<span style="text-decoration: underline;">A</span>), row stitch count (<span style="text-decoration: underline;">B</span>), and number of total row repeats (<span style="text-decoration: underline;">C</span>).</strong></p>
<p>-Chain stitches throughout the pattern <strong>do no count</strong> as a stitch, nor are they included in total stitch counts.</p>
<p>-Throughout this pattern you change color every row working all RS rows in Cruise and all WS rows in Lido Deck. This gives a two-tone, reversible effect!</p>
<p>-Substitute other yarns of any weight by using it’s recommended hook size and following the same stitch pattern with a foundation chain that&#8217;s the width of your desired blanket size and working row repeats until you&#8217;ve reached the length you desire. Alterations may affect yardage.</p>
<p>-Use worsted weight yarns following the <strong>yardage chart below</strong>. See &#8220;Yarn &amp; Substitution&#8221; section above for additional guidance.</p>

<p>An easy crochet blanket with a fun, new stitch &#8211; my<a href="https://sewrellapatterns.com/products/crochet-old-fashioned-blanket" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"><b> Crochet Old Fashioned Throw Blanket</b></a> &#8211; is a free pattern here on the blog! Read through my inspiration, design process, and lots of info on the <a href="https://shrsl.com/28o5j" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">perfect yarn</a> I chose. Or scroll on down for the free pattern.</p>
<h2>The Inspiration + Design</h2>
<p>I had a stash of <a href="https://shrsl.com/28o5j">Lion Brand&#8217;s Touch of Cashmere yarn</a> in the gorgeous color <a href="https://shrsl.com/28o5j">Brandy</a>, just sitting on my shelf, begging to be used for something as stunning as she is. When I came across this mini bean stitch, I knew this yarn would be the perfect thing for it. This stitch worked up in any yarn will create a squishy fabric and a drape like you&#8217;ve never seen. But then combine it with this also very squishy, soft, dreamy yarn &#8211; and you&#8217;ve got a match truly made in the crochet heavens.</p>
<p>This crochet old fashioned throw blanket is just warm and cozy enough, as well as light enough to use year round. I&#8217;ll just say this: if there&#8217;s a blanket you should splurge on and invest time in making, <em>it&#8217;s this one</em>.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-9257" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09254.jpg" alt="" width="1366" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09254.jpg 1366w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09254-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09254-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09254-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09254-768x1151.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09254-1025x1536.jpg 1025w" sizes="(max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px" /></p>
<h2>One blanket, so many sizes</h2>
<p>Although I am in love with this crochet old fashioned throw blanket in the throw size, I have written this pattern to work for blankets of just about any size!</p>
<p>Within the pattern below you&#8217;ll find a table of blanket sizes that are included in the pattern as well as their measurements and the yardage required to make them (provided you&#8217;re using the yarn I used or a similar worsted weight yarn).</p>
<p><a href="https://sewrellapatterns.com/products/crochet-old-fashioned-blanket"><img class="aligncenter wp-image-9276 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pattern-PDF-ad-old-fashioned.jpg" alt="" width="1505" height="973" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pattern-PDF-ad-old-fashioned.jpg 1505w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pattern-PDF-ad-old-fashioned-300x194.jpg 300w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pattern-PDF-ad-old-fashioned-1024x662.jpg 1024w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pattern-PDF-ad-old-fashioned-150x97.jpg 150w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/pattern-PDF-ad-old-fashioned-768x497.jpg 768w" sizes="(max-width: 1505px) 100vw, 1505px" /></a></p>
<p>Another fun aspect of this blanket is that you can sort of create your own crochet old fashioned throw blanket! Using yarn of any weight, you can just follow the pattern making the foundation chain as wide as you&#8217;d like your blanket to be and continuing with row repeats until it&#8217;s long enough.</p>
<p>You could make it in a solid color like I did here, or create a striped pattern, a two-tone stripe effect &#8211; anything goes. The crochet old fashioned throw blanket is totally customizable and my favorite kind of project!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-9261" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09300.jpg" alt="" width="1366" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09300.jpg 1366w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09300-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09300-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09300-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09300-768x1151.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09300-1025x1536.jpg 1025w" sizes="(max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px" /></p>
<h2>The Mini Bean Stitch</h2>
<p>This fun stitch creates a beautiful, drapey finished piece that I am just in love with. It&#8217;s really simple and easy to learn &#8211; then you just repeat it for the whole blanket! So once you get the hang of the stitch, this crochet old fashioned throw blanket is the perfect Netflix-able project. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQbH92FmpSs&amp;t=1s">Watch my video tutorial</a> below to make the pattern, or apply it to your own unique project!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-9260" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09290.jpg" alt="" width="1366" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09290.jpg 1366w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09290-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09290-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09290-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09290-768x1151.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC09290-1025x1536.jpg 1025w" sizes="(max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px" /></p>
<h2><strong>Yarn + Substitution</strong></h2>
<p>I used a blend of <a href="http://shrsl.com/23zee">Lion Brand&#8217;s Touch of Cashmere</a> in Brandy, which is a worsted weight yarn.</p>
<p><strong>A note on substituting yarns for this project</strong>: there is a lot of variation in the yarn industry within the world of worsted weight category 4 weight yarn. The best way I know to compare yarns of different origins, fiber contents, and brand are to look at the yardage per gram. On the yarn label for any yarn (from a big box store or from an independent dyer), the yardage for the ball or skein is listed.</p>
<p><strong>The <a href="https://shrsl.com/28o5j">Touch of Cashmere yarn</a> I used from Lion Brand is an 100 gram ball with 219 yards. 219/100=2.19 yards per gram.</strong></p>
<p>I try to make sure any yarns I&#8217;m substituting are absolutely no more than 0.5 yards per gram difference from the yarn originally used in the pattern. The lower this number is, the closer these comparative yarns will be in gauge, resulting in a seamless finished project!</p>

<h2>Crochet Coasters that are perfect for every table!</h2>
<p>I recently discovered a stitch called <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/crochet-thermal-stitch-tutorial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the thermal stitch</a> and I&#8217;m in love! In playing with it I figured out an easy way to crochet this stitch simply and easily &#8211; check out the video tutorial <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/crochet-thermal-stitch-tutorial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">here</a>! I loved the texture and thickness of the stitch and immediately wanted to figure out a way to bring this woven look into my home with it&#8217;s own pattern.</p>
<p>We all have that end table or coffee table that we set our coffee, tea, lemonade, (or if we&#8217;re being responsible adults) water down on right? My favorite end table has a glass top and I can&#8217;t stand when a glass sweats and makes a ring of moisture on the table, yuck! NOT TO MENTION IF A MUG WERE TO SCRATCH MY GORGEOUS WEST ELM END TABLE. Good grief, that stresses me out just thinking about it.</p>
<p>So when I thought about how to bring <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/crochet-thermal-stitch-tutorial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the thermal stitch</a> to life and what my home could use &#8211; a crochet coaster pattern felt just right!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-9235 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08714.jpg" alt="easy crochet coasters that are thick and stylish" width="1366" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08714.jpg 1366w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08714-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08714-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08714-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08714-768x1151.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08714-1025x1536.jpg 1025w" sizes="(max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px" /></p>
<h2>Crochet Coasters make the best gifts</h2>
<p>These crochet coasters make great holiday or hostess gifts (they take about 20 minutes per coaster to make!) &#8211; I&#8217;ll be giving sets of these along with my favorite tea tied up with a fluffy piece of scrap yarn. Gift giving season never looked so good &#8211; or was so utilitarian!</p>
<p>Think of what a happy neighbor gift that would make!</p>

<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-9237 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08729.jpg" alt="simple beginner friendly crochet coasters" width="1366" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08729.jpg 1366w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08729-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08729-683x1024.jpg 683w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08729-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08729-768x1151.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/DSC08729-1025x1536.jpg 1025w" sizes="(max-width: 1366px) 100vw, 1366px" /></p>
<h3><strong>The Yarn</strong></h3>
<p>I had quite a few skeins of <a href="http://shrsl.com/1tf72" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lion Brand&#8217;s new cotton blend yarn Re-Up</a> lying around the house and I loved them for these crochet coasters. The color lineup has some great <a href="http://shrsl.com/1tf72" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">neutrals</a> to go with my home decor &#8211; that rustic grey has a bit of heather to it and is so pretty in person!</p>
<p>I held two strands of yarn together for this pattern to make the crochet coasters EVEN thicker &#8211; I love the texure it gives! I held together two strands of the Ecru color but you could hold together a strand each of two different colors to get a marled effect. That&#8217;s actually what I did with my <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/double-thick-crochet-potholders-free-pattern/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">crochet potholders pattern</a> that matches this set and they turned out gorgeous!</p>
<p>I highly recommend using cotton yarn for this pattern &#8211; <a href="http://shrsl.com/1tf72" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Re-Up</a> is a wonderful option due to the color choice and the price point ($1.99 per skein, 2 skeins make 4 crochet coasters!) but other cotton yarns would work too. Just make sure to stay away from acrylic or primarily polyester yarns to be sure hot beverages don&#8217;t melt the fibers. Cotton also performs better than other fibers when wet should you encounter a spill!</p>

<h2>Crochet Potholders that are perfect for every kitchen!</h2>
<p>After designing a WHOLE bunch of wearable pieces over the last couple of years I&#8217;ve been itching to work on some smaller projects as a creative palate cleanse. My little family also recently moved into a new house with a big gorgeous kitchen that was desperately lacking some warmth and texture. I love cozy spaces with layers of decor and this kitchen was looking a little&#8230; hallow.</p>
<p>So when I thought about how to bring <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/crochet-thermal-stitch-tutorial/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the thermal stitch</a> to life and what my home could use &#8211; a crochet potholder felt just right!</p>

<h2>Crochet Potholders make the best gifts</h2>
<p>These crochet potholders make great holiday or hostess gifts (they take about an hour to whip up!) &#8211; I&#8217;ll be giving sets of these along with my favorite cookbook tied up with a fluffy piece of scrap yarn. Gift giving season never looked so good &#8211; or was so utilitarian!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-8420 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/IMG_3336.jpg" alt="Crochet potholders make a great gift when paired with a good cookbook." width="1365" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/IMG_3336.jpg 1365w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/IMG_3336-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/IMG_3336-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/IMG_3336-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/09/IMG_3336-683x1024.jpg 683w" sizes="(max-width: 1365px) 100vw, 1365px" /></p>
<h3><strong>The Yarn</strong></h3>
<p>I had quite a few skeins of <a href="http://shrsl.com/1tf72" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lion Brand&#8217;s new cotton blend yarn Re-Up</a> lying around the house and I loved them for these crochet potholders. The color lineup has some great <a href="http://shrsl.com/1tf72" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">neutrals</a> to go with my home decor &#8211; that rustic grey has a bit of heather to it and is so pretty in person!</p>
<p>I held two strands of yarn together for this pattern to make the crochet potholders EVEN thicker &#8211; no way was I going to burn my hands on those hot pots coming out of the oven! I made one potholder each in the <a href="http://shrsl.com/1tf72" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">grey and cream colors</a> and then made a third potholder holding one strand of each color together to achieve a marled look. I love the way all three look as a set.</p>
<p>I highly recommend using cotton yarn for this pattern &#8211; <a href="http://shrsl.com/1tf72" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Re-Up</a> is a wonderful option due to the color choice and the price point ($1.99 per skein!) but other cotton yarns would work too. Just make sure to stay away from acrylic or primarily polyester yarns to be sure hot pots and pans don&#8217;t melt the fibers. Cotton also performs better than other fibers when wet should you encounter a spill!</p>

<h2>A truly beginner friendly pattern</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.sewrella.com/category/kids/kids-accessories/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">A crochet baby hat</a> might be the sweetest thing to make &#8211; and some of the easiest! For those of you that might be brand new to crochet, don&#8217;t worry! I&#8217;ll walk you through this pattern with written instructions as well as a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dimU0gzwIOw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">full video tutorial</a>. I chose really simple stitches for this pattern so you can follow along without expert-level ability. Just be patient with yourself and have fun!</p>
<h2>The Inspiration + Design</h2>
<p>When I was pregnant with my son Parker, I wanted to make a cute <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/?s=parker" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">newborn set</a> for him! I had trouble finding a boyish set that I loved so I set out to design my own. This was one of the very first patterns I posted on my blog and I&#8217;m so glad you&#8217;ve loved it as much as I have over the years. I made only a newborn hat in the original post but I&#8217;ve scaled the pattern to include hats for all baby sizes, preschoolers and children! Yay!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-7714 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0292.jpg" alt="Crochet baby hat, baby booties, and diaper cover to make the Parker baby set of free crochet patterns." width="1365" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0292.jpg 1365w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0292-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0292-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0292-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0292-683x1024.jpg 683w" sizes="(max-width: 1365px) 100vw, 1365px" /></p>
<h2>This crochet baby hat is part of a set &#8211; see the <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/the-parker-crochet-baby-booties/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">matching baby booties here</a> &amp; the <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/the-parker-crochet-diaper-cover/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">matching diaper cover here</a>.</h2>
<p><a href="https://www.sewrella.com/?s=parker" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">This set</a> is a great gift for baby showers or new additions to family and friends&#8217; families, and it&#8217;s a very gender neutral pattern. I&#8217;ve got it pictured here in the classic blue and pink as well as a gorgeous <a href="http://shrsl.com/1yue4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">grey marble</a>. I love <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/category/kids/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">modern baby items</a> that are simplistic in design and can work for any mom&#8217;s style! <a href="https://www.sewrella.com/category/kids/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Click here</a> to check out all my kids crochet patterns.</p>
<p>I wish I&#8217;d been able to get some photos of Parker in this set when he was born, but he weighed in at a whoppin&#8217; 10 lb. 2 oz and was too chunky to fit into them! Lol!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-7734 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0313.jpg" alt="Baby shower gift to crochet, free pattern for the beginner Parker crochet baby hat." width="1365" height="2048" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0313.jpg 1365w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0313-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0313-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0313-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/IMG_0313-683x1024.jpg 683w" sizes="(max-width: 1365px) 100vw, 1365px" /></p>
<h3><strong>The Yarn</strong></h3>
<p>I decided to use <a href="https://shareasale.com/r.cfm?b=1026079&amp;u=1700448&amp;m=72611&amp;urllink=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Elionbrand%2Ecom%2Fvannas%2Dchoice%2Dyarn%2Ehtml&amp;afftrack=" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lion Brand Vanna&#8217;s Choice yarn</a> for this pattern as it&#8217;s a very versatile worsted weight yarn with a stunning color range. There are colors to match any baby shower or nursery theme, as well as any individual style.</p>
<p>However you can use any worsted weight yarn for this project! There are wonderful wool based worsted weight yarns to use for this project as well as other natural and synthetic fibers. Really, anything goes as long as you can meet the gauge listed in the pattern below.</p>
<p>I do have a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dimU0gzwIOw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">video tutorial</a> for the newborn size of this hat for all my visual learners below &#8211; enjoy! <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/12.0.0-1/72x72/1f609.png" alt="😉" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /></p>

<h2>This crochet wrap has everything!</h2>
<p>It&#8217;s got color, it&#8217;s got neutrals, it&#8217;s got easy-peasy stitches, it&#8217;s a <em>free pattern. </em>It&#8217;s the<strong> Wishing Well Wrap crochet wrap pattern</strong>!</p>
<p>This versatile crochet wrap accessory is one of those projects that takes a little getting used to at first. Then after about the 5th row you&#8217;re zooming along watching the latest season of New Girl and your hands are on autopilot. Isn&#8217;t that the <em>BEST</em> kind of pattern?</p>
<p>I love this crochet wrap because it&#8217;s SO customizable. Make it smaller, make it bigger, watch the color changes, let it go, make it solid. Add tassels, no tassels, multi-colored tassels, fringe, anything goes.</p>
<p>Basically the world (and this wrap) are your oyster. So go for it!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-4882 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7935.jpg" alt="cake yarn creates a stunning faded effect in this crochet wrap shawl." width="1432" height="2048" data-pin-media="crochet-easy-wrap-PIN.jpg" data-pin-description="Learn how to crochet this easy Wishing Well Wrap with my free pattern and video tutorial - use easy self striping yarn to create a beginner lacy shawl for all sizes." data-pin-id="212795151127750756" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7935.jpg 1432w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7935-105x150.jpg 105w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7935-210x300.jpg 210w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7935-768x1098.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7935-716x1024.jpg 716w" sizes="(max-width: 1432px) 100vw, 1432px" /></p>
<h2>Beginner friendly and netflix-able.</h2>
<p>Both beginner crocheters and experienced makers, rejoice! This crochet wrap is simple. Once you get the hang of the repeats (it should start to make sense fairly quickly as we basically repeat the same two rows dozens of times) you&#8217;ll be ready to put on a movie and relax into a mindless project.</p>
<p>The result will not look quick or easy, even though it was both! It looks lacy and intricate and the color changing yarn just adds to the effortless simplicity of this project. The initial impression is that this wrap took an expert level crafter. It&#8217;s really just a series of double crochets and chain stitches to create little eyelets. You&#8217;ll be amazed at how simply this crochet wrap comes together!</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-4881 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7932.jpg" alt="easy stitches and drapey tassels make for a effortless crochet wrap" width="1365" height="2048" data-pin-media="crochet-easy-wrap-PIN.jpg" data-pin-description="Learn how to crochet this easy Wishing Well Wrap with my free pattern and video tutorial - use easy self striping yarn to create a beginner lacy shawl for all sizes." data-pin-id="212795151127750756" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7932.jpg 1365w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7932-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7932-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7932-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7932-683x1024.jpg 683w" sizes="(max-width: 1365px) 100vw, 1365px" /></p>
<p>However, let me tell ya a bit about this <em>awesome</em> yarn and other cake options first &#8211;</p>
<h2><strong>I like eating, I mean crocheting, CAKE!</strong></h2>
<p>I chose to use <a href="http://shrsl.com/wk7z" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lion Brand Yarn&#8217;s Mandala Baby </a>yarn for this crochet wrap! I first saw this colorway in New York City during the Lion Brand Yarn Blogger&#8217;s Bash and as soon as I saw it, I turned it over to see the colorway name. Anybody else do that? The name of the color pretty much decides if I&#8217;ll use it or not, ha! It was called <a href="http://shrsl.com/wk7z" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Wishing Well</a>! As if I couldn&#8217;t love it any more.</p>
<p>All of the new <a href="http://shrsl.com/wk7z" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mandala Baby</a> line are available only at Walmart Stores and <a href="http://shrsl.com/wk7z" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">LionBrand.com</a> &amp; they were created with little ones in mind. <h2><strong>Why Cake?</strong></h2>
<p>Before picking up this Mandala Baby project, I&#8217;d never used a cake yarn before. And when I say &#8220;cake yarn&#8221; I mean one of the many variations of self striping yarns that have been flying off the shelves of craft stores in the last few years. They have big chunks of color that suddenly change to the next color and usually have several different hues in one cake.</p>
<p>I love this concept because it takes a lot of the guesswork out of picking out colors that work nicely together. The yarn companies do it for us! (Thanks, LB). So even though the Wishing Well Wrap has stunning tones of blue and tan with just the right amount of white thrown in. I am not completely responsible for creating that magic, a lot of it was done for me by <a href="http://shrsl.com/wk7z" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">the yarn</a>!</p>
<h2><strong>Cutting the Cake</strong></h2>
<p>I will tell ya that I cut and spliced the yarn a <em>tiny</em> bit to make the stripes in my wrap lay how I wanted. I only did this in 3 places. I saw a color change coming up and decided it was too abrupt to change in the middle of a row of stitches. So I opted to go ahead and snip that yarn before beginning my next row, set aside the few yards of that last color to get to the next color, join the yarn with my new color, and keep on stitching.</p>
<p>Most of the color transitions worked out just fine for me and my wrap, the color changed either right when I started a new row or right around that area,. And since I wasn&#8217;t too worried about the stripes being absolutely perfect, I rolled with it. I&#8217;m pretty happy with the result!</p>
<p>And for those of you thinking &#8220;Sewrella! You wasted all that yarn cutting and splicing!&#8221; Fear not friends, each time I skipped a few yards of yarn I set it aside and made tassels for another project (more on that to come) from the leftover bits! Which was really just my frugal attempt to use anything I could from those cuttings set aside. Clever, no?</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-4879 size-full" src="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7827.jpg" alt="crochet wrap pattern wishing well wrap " width="1365" height="2048" data-pin-media="crochet-easy-wrap-PIN.jpg" data-pin-description="Learn how to crochet this easy Wishing Well Wrap with my free pattern and video tutorial - use easy self striping yarn to create a beginner lacy shawl for all sizes." data-pin-id="212795151127750756" srcset="https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7827.jpg 1365w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7827-100x150.jpg 100w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7827-200x300.jpg 200w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7827-768x1152.jpg 768w, https://www.sewrella.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/IMG_7827-683x1024.jpg 683w" sizes="(max-width: 1365px) 100vw, 1365px" /></p>
<h2><strong>Clover ate all the Cake!</strong></h2>
<p>(Get it? My hook is a Clover brand hook and I used all the yarn cake? Heh heh. Don&#8217;t worry, I won&#8217;t go into stand up comedy anytime soon)</p>
<p>I wound up with only a tiny bit of my 2 cakes leftover after making this wrap. So although you can continue on with the pattern repeat to make the wrap as large as you want, beware that you&#8217;ll definitely need a 3rd cake if you plan to make this wrap more than a couple of rows larger than mine!</p>
<p>On that same note, you may only need one cake<strong style="font-style: italic;"> if you make this crochet wrap for a child</strong>. To do that just follow the same pattern below for adults, and stop repeating the rows when you&#8217;ve got a wrap just larger than the child&#8217;s wingspan! Done and done.</p>
<p><center></center><center></center>There is even a <a href="http://shrsl.com/wtro" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">kit</a> available from Lion Brand with all the yarn you need and a printed copy of the crochet wrap pattern, shipped right to you!</p>

<h3><strong>Pattern Notes:</strong></h3>
<p><em><strong>UPDATED 4/30 &#8212; After many questions from you guys, I reworked this pattern and added a chart to make it easy as pie. Enjoy!</strong></em></p>
<p>-For reference, model is 5’5” tall with a 39&#8243; bust.</p>
<p>-Ch 2 sts <strong>DO</strong> count as a st throughout the pattern.</p>
<p>-Pattern is worked beginning in the center of the wrap and worked in turned rows to expand the size. Close attention paid to increases at the beginning and end of each row are imperative.</p>
<p>-Each long side of the triangle (and each row) should always have the same number of stitches.</p>
<p>-Whether pulling from the center or outside of the cake, be sure you pull from the same place when you join a new cake to your project.</p>
<p>-I pull from the center and used up a good chunk of that dark blue yarn for my accent tassels. If you want tassels a different color than what you&#8217;ll end your wrap with, make tassels before beginning wrap.</p>
<p>-I cut the yarn to skip to the next color whenever I was beginning a new row and didn&#8217;t have enough of that color left to finish the next row. Cut yarn, set aside the rest of that color for tassels, and join new yarn where color abruptly changes in your cake before beginning another row. This will create more even striping without color changes in the middle of your rows. To conserve yarn or get a more randomly striped look, don&#8217;t splice yarn &#8211; just crochet as normal.</p>
<p>-To alter sizing, simply omit or add on repeats of the 2 Row stitch pattern to desired size. In general, this wrap is best sized as a few inches longer than your wingspan (middle fingers tip to tip when held out straight from your sides). 1 cake may be sufficient for toddlers and small kids, 2 cakes are enough for teens and most adults, plus sizes or any larger than my sample (70&#8243; wide) may need a 3rd cake.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Gather up into more of a tassel shape. Your first yarn tie should be at the top and all loose strands going in the opposite direction.</p>
<p>Lay your other cut piece of yarn under your tassel widthwise about 1&#8243; below your first tie.</p>
<p>Straighten all loose strands and tie tightly to secure, You should have a much more recognizable tassel shape.</p>

<p>I like to straighten my tassels by steaming them! This is optional but will give your tassel a more polished look.</p>
<p>Attach 1 tassel to each end of your wrap and weave ends.</p>
