The Inspiration + Design

I’ve always loved vintage silhouettes and making a baby set with a classic bonnet & bloomers is just my style! I wanted to make a couple of basic, classic pieces that are just the right thing for sweet new babies.

The bonnet is extremely simple in construction and works up very quickly in the round and then in turned rows.

The bloomers are also simple in the shape but with a textured waistband and secure drawstring. This allows for the fit to be adjustable when dressing and undressing the baby.

The perfect crochet baby set – beginners included!

A simple pattern with video tutorials to help out the beginner crocheter make this crochet baby set with ease. Full videos are embedded in the written pattern below so just scroll on down for those!

I chose very simple stitches in order to keep this crochet baby set easy and beginner friendly. I believe an advanced beginner could easily tackle this project!

Vintage style with a classic craft

My favorite style of crochet pattern is a classic, vintage style that nods to the history of the craft. Crochet is something that has been around for generations and I love designs that acknowledge that history in a timeless and classic way. That’s why this crochet baby set is so timeless and elegant.

New baby gift giving is easy with this set

If you’re in need of the perfect baby shower gift, this crochet baby set would be a lovely gift along with a book of nursery rhymes!

It can even be worked up last minute! It took me less than two hours to make both the bonnet and the bloomers so as long as you have some weight 4 worsted yarn on hand (preferably of the baby variety), this crochet baby set can be done and ready to gift in an afternoon.

Super soft baby yarn

For this crochet baby set I chose to use Lion Brand Feels Like Butta yarn from Michaels. This yarn has a suede-like feel and is so super soft – the name really doesn’t lie! There are some gorgeous muted pastel tones in this yarn line that are absolutely perfect for our vintage style crochet baby set. They look almost worn in and aged in the most delicate way even when they’re fresh off the hook.

I used the colorways blossom and sage for my samples but all the colors of this yarn that I saw at Michaels would make a gorgeous vintage crochet baby set. Here are the ones that I saw at my local Michaels – you could even choose a color to match the nursery of the new baby!

Read through my inspiration, design process, and lots of info on the perfect yarn I chose, or scroll on down for the free pattern.

A truly beginner friendly pattern

A crochet baby hat might be the sweetest thing to make – and some of the easiest! For those of you that might be brand new to crochet, don’t worry! I’ll walk you through this pattern with written instructions as well as a full video tutorial. I chose really simple stitches for this pattern so you can follow along without expert-level ability. Just be patient with yourself and have fun!

The Inspiration + Design

When I was pregnant with my son Parker, I wanted to make a cute newborn set for him! I had trouble finding a boyish set that I loved so I set out to design my own. This was one of the very first patterns I posted on my blog and I’m so glad you’ve loved it as much as I have over the years. I made only a newborn hat in the original post but I’ve scaled the pattern to include hats for all baby sizes, preschoolers and children! Yay!

This crochet baby hat is part of a set – see the matching baby booties here & the matching diaper cover here.

This set is a great gift for baby showers or new additions to family and friends’ families, and it’s a very gender neutral pattern. I’ve got it pictured here in the classic blue and pink as well as a gorgeous grey marble. I love modern baby items that are simplistic in design and can work for any mom’s style! Click here to check out all my kids crochet patterns.

I wish I’d been able to get some photos of Parker in this set when he was born, but he weighed in at a whoppin’ 10 lb. 2 oz and was too chunky to fit into them! Lol!

The Yarn

I decided to use Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn for this pattern as it’s a very versatile worsted weight yarn with a stunning color range. There are colors to match any baby shower or nursery theme, as well as any individual style.

However you can use any worsted weight yarn for this project! There are wonderful wool based worsted weight yarns to use for this project as well as other natural and synthetic fibers. Really, anything goes as long as you can meet the gauge listed in the pattern below.

I do have a video tutorial for the newborn size of this hat for all my visual learners below – enjoy!

This project is part of a set – see the matching baby hat here & the matching diaper cover here.

This set is a great gift for baby showers or new additions to family and friends’ families, and it’s a very gender neutral pattern. I’ve got it pictured here in the classic blue and pink as well as a gorgeous grey marble. I love modern baby items that are simplistic in design and can work for any mom’s style!

There are colors to match any baby shower or nursery theme, as well as individual style.

However, you can use any worsted weight yarn for this project! There are wonderful wool based worsted weight yarns to use for this project as well as other natural and synthetic fibers. Really, anything goes as long as you can meet the gauge listed in the pattern below.

I do have a video tutorial for these adorable little booties for all my visual learners below – enjoy!

The Yarn

I decided to use Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn for this pattern as it’s a very versatile worsted weight yarn with a stunning color range. There are colors to match any baby shower or nursery theme, as well as individual style.

However you can use any worsted weight yarn for this project! There are wonderful wool based worsted weight yarns to use for this project as well as other natural and synthetic fibers. Really, anything goes as long as you can meet the gauge listed in the pattern below.

Now time to sew the button – be sure you sew it onto the right side! You want to identify the side of your diaper cover that is the “right side” or the side that has the ribbing from those Fpdcs and Bpdcs exposed. This will be the side that you see when the little guy is wearing the cover, not the side against his bum or diaper. Here are some photos to help you out with placing your button!

Hi friends! I’m so excited to introduce you to Destiny from Knifty Knittings today. She’s the sweetest gal who designs gorgeous, approachable knits with the most perfect pom poms I’ve ever seen!
Hello there! I’m Destiny, the knitter and designer behind Knifty Knittings. I’m a born and raised Alaskan, living and knitting in Michigan with my husband and precocious toddler. You can find me and my designs over at Knifty Knittings!

I am a firm believer that pom poms make everything better. I designed this fun and simple scarf with my 3 year old in mind – I needed something that would stay put as she ran around and conquered snow hills, but also looked cute. The poms are cute, but also functional! Wrap the scarf around, tie the poms, and it won’t budge!

I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick for this project, but any super bulky weight yarn (category 6) should work just fine. For a non-wool alternative, try Lion Brand Hometown USA or the new Lion Brand Thick & Quick – the cousin of WETQ now without wool! Let’s get started…

m1R – make 1 right leaning increase

Notes:

– This scarf begins at a point with 3 stitches. Increases are placed along both edges for the first several rows to form a triangle. Keep increasing until the scarf is as wide as you like (toddler sized instructions are written).

– When the scarf is as long as you’d like, you will decrease along both edges (mirroring the increases from the beginning).

Pattern:

Using the long tail method, CO 3 sts.

Increase section:

Row 1: sl1k, k2

Row 2: sl1k, m1R, k1, m1L, k1

Row 3: sl1k, k4

Row 4: sl1k, m1R, k3, m1L, k1

Row 5: sl1k, k6

Row 6: sl1k, m1R, k5, m1L, k1 (9 sts)

Row 7: sl1k, k8

Repeat row 7 until scarf measures 48”, or desired length, then begin decreasing.

Decrease section:

Row 1: ssk, k5, k2tog

Row 2: sl1k, k6

Row 3: ssk, k3, k2tog

Row 4: sl1k, k4

Row 5: ssk, k1, k2tog (3 sts)

Bind off remaining 3 sts and weave in ends. Make 2 poms using a 3 ⅜” pom pom maker (click here) for my pom pom tutorial). Attach poms to the ends of the scarf, and enjoy!

It’s officially fall, ya’ll!

We have until just about Christmastime to enjoy this beautiful season complete with sweater weather, a crispness in the air, turning leaves, and -you guessed it- PUMPKIN EVERYTHING.

You may be aware of my pumpkin addiction from THIS post and THIS crochet pattern.

Nevertheless, here is yet another pumpkin pattern! (I’ll never stop with the pumpkin)

This time, we are adorning our cute little pumpkins with little pumpkin hats!

This little pattern is based on the original Parker Newborn Crochet Hat – however my Parker isn’t a newborn anymore (*sobs incoherently*), he’s four months old! And has aggressively outgrown all of the hats I made for his tiny newborn head. So of course, I had to whip up a fall-themed brother to the original! Now, I know what you’re thinking… “Sewrella! There are already sooooo many crochet pumpkin hats out there! We don’t need another one! Let me live a day without pumpkin things accosting my face!”

Well, honey. Take that negativity somewhere else because it’s about to get PUMPKIN-Y UP IN HERE.

Most of those beloved pumpkin hats have a stem/leaf/squiggly thing perched atop your little ones’ head. To me, I don’t see stems – it looks like an orange and green boob. (That’s right, I said it) Maybe I just have nursing on the brain but I’m not a fan of the look!

But how could my pumpkin go to visit the pumpkin patch without his own pumpkin hat? (<<Guinness world record for most times pumpkin has been used in a sentence??)

So I settled on a fluffy green pom pom for my little nugget – still keeping with the pumpkin colors, gourd and stem, but a bit more subtle.

You could also make this hat in any colors ya like – it doesn’t have to be pumpkin related at all! (Although give me one good reason to take away the pumpkin, I dare ya)

Pom Pom “Stem”

– With fern, make a pom pom using the Clover pom pom maker. My child is modeling the 3-6 month size hat and I used the smaller pom pom maker in the larger duo sold at most craft stores. Your pom pom can be any size you like!

– Leave a long tail on your pom for sewing onto your hat, right over your magic ring

Some people call me a hipster mom. My three month old son is my first baby and I still like to dress and look somewhat put together – but let’s be honest, there is only so put together I can be when I haven’t slept in months! And while being in DESPERATE need of some coffee, but that’s another story for another time.

Being that I like to put myself together, you know my little man has to be looking adorable too. Although he HATES wearing hats, which I found out the hard way after trying this cute little hat on him, I still love this one!

It’s slightly slouchy in the back, but not too big that it would get in the way of playing. Just a relaxed fit!

The sizing below is pretty accurate, but my little guy’s noggin is in the 95th percentile, so although he’s three months old, he’s wearing the 6-9 month size.

Hope you all enjoy this adorably hip slouchy baby beanie!

If you haven’t rushed to your nearest theater to see Finding Dory yet, you need to! Stop reading right now. Rush to the theater.

I’ll wait.

Okay, now that we all know what an amazing movie it is (I venture to go as far as saying it’s as good as Finding Nemo!) let’s proceed with today’s project!

As Dory is the heroin of the movie, it makes sense that Pixar gave us a bit more background on her, and everyone is loving Baby Dory! She’s so small, cute, and cuddly even if a bit confused. But hey, that’s Dory.

So I whipped up a Baby Dory hat for all the munchkins out there who want to look just like their favorite fish!

Make this adorable hat in any size below, then make and add the character embellishments.

OH – and just keep swimming!

So I’m six months into this pregnancy.

My little baby boy is kicking around and making sure I know he’s there – which is an incredible feeling!

It is, though, making me more and more aware everyday of how much has to be done before his big arrival.

In an effort to calm this anxiety what is a girl to do but pick up her crochet hook and make something for her baby to be?

This project had to be quick and simple though as my checklist is long and there is no time to waste!

So I made the simplest baby beanie for my sweet little guy in a fun cotton candy colored color way.

I know this little hat brightened my day and I can’t wait to pop it on his little noggin!

The hat I made is in a NEWBORN size – perfect for tiny little cuties.

PATTERN:

Get the ad-free, large print, printable PDF pattern from Etsy HERE.

PIN this pattern to your Pinterest boards for later HERE.

Add this pattern to your Ravelry queue HERE.

Materials
-Worsted weight yarn (I used Joann’s Big Twist in Nursery Rhyme Variegated)
-Size H 5mm crochet hook
-Tapestry needle

Begin with a magic ring, Ch 2, 11 Dc in magic ring, sl st to join, Ch 2
Round 2: 2 Dc in each st around, sl st to join, Ch 2
Round 3: *2 Dc in first st, Dc in next st*, repeat from * around, sl st to join, Ch 2
Round 4: *2 Dc in first st, Dc in next 2 sts*, repeat from * around, sl st to join, Ch 2
Round 5-10: Dc in each st around, sl st to join, Ch 2
Round 11: Sc in each st around, sl st to join, finish off, weave ends

This beanie is so quick and easy – it will probably only take you 30 minutes to whip up!

This is also a great pattern to use for quick donation beanies. Hospitals and NICUs are always in need of handmade donated items and these take very little time to whip up!
