Pattern Update

This sweet crochet chocolate bunny actually made its debut what seems like eons ago, in my old monthly subscription service called Happy Yarn Mail. While that business is no longer an active one, it was fun while it lasted and taught me a lot. The patterns I featured then, now live as paid patterns on my pattern shop, with a couple of them also making it to the blog as a free pattern due to popularity.

Well let me just say, that this one was long overdue in making it here on the blog – and receiving a huge overhaul. It’s continued to rank well in my Etsy sales over the years, spiking around this time of the year before Easter. I’m proud to say it’s currently at an all-time high, sliding into the #2 spot as a best selling pattern! So I knew it was finally time I carve out the time to give this plushy the attention she so rightly deserves.

So without any further ado… I give you the Crochet Chocolate Bunny, in all of her luscious glory!! (not going to lie, I think I’d take her over a real chocolate bunny… or perhaps not. I have a rather small amount of restraint against chocolate… & it’s currently wearing real thin…… *BRB while I grab some of my fave chocolate*)

So many uses!

This crochet chocolate bunny can be used as Easter decor, a spring tabletop piece, or a kid’s gift! She is so versatile and will be loved by many! She’s cute and squishy, and just the right size for all ages. The best part is that she can be worked up and finished in a day! If you have a few hours to dedicate to making, this will be your go-to project for spring. She has a nice way of blending in with all kinds of home decor, or fitting in just right to your little niece’s stuffie collection.

Whatever the need, the crochet chocolate bunny is a fun project for any occasion!

Stash-Buster Project

I didn’t use a full skein of any one yarn for this project. That’s right – not even for the body of the crochet chocolate bunny. Given, the Heartland yarn I used is generous in yardage, but you could easily use what you have laying around. Or maybe you don’t have all of these laying around… You can still wind up saving some $$$ by only buying a portion of the yarns you need instead of all of them.

If it were me, I would prefer to stick to the brown for the crochet chocolate bunny (ya know, because chocolate is also brown), and a green for the leaf. But the neckband (whether you’re crocheting one or using ribbon) and rose colors can be totally interchangeable! You can use all different sorts of odds and ends left over from other projects.

We’re anti-waste here, and I really really dislike throwing things away (Yes this can lead to some clutter, but you just never know! I highly advise spending a few bucks on a big tub to store said scraps). So those bits you thought would never see the light of day again? Surprise! They are now, here in this project. Read on for a quick note on substitution below, then we’ll get going on the pattern!

Yarn + Substitution

I used a combination of Lion Brand’s Heartland in Sequoia for the crochet chocolate bunny body portion, and some of Lion Brand’s Vanna’s Choice in Pink, Fern, and Mustard for the accessories.

A note on substituting yarns and blending yarns: there is a lot of variation in the yarn industry within the world of worsted weight category 4 weight yarn. The best way I know to compare yarns of different origins, fiber contents, and brand are to look at the yardage per gram. On the yarn label for any yarn, the yardage for the ball or skein will be listed.

Normally, I try to make sure any yarns I’m blending within one project like this are absolutely no more than 0.5 yards per gram difference from each other. But because of the uses for these two different yarns in this pattern, it’s not as important for the gauge to be exact. Especially with needing multiple colors, I would advise just trying to find what matches. This would also be a great use of your stash yarn or leftovers from other projects, since you only need a small amount for each accessory!

Read below about the inspiration, the perfect yarn I chose, and this beautiful stitch or scroll on down for the free pattern, video and photo tutorial.

The Inspiration + Design

These tabletop pumpkins are the perfect project to get you in the autumn mood! Sprinkle them anywhere around your house – yes, anywhere! I placed a few by the fireplace, on my dining room table, even some outside for decor on the porch. But let me tell ya, don’t stop there. There is no such thing as too many pumpkins.

That being said, the internet may not want another crochet pumpkin, but my home sure needed them! They turned out so darn cute that it felt wrong to keep the pattern all to myself. So here is my slice of homemade pumpkin heaven to share with the world. I hope you love these squishy little cuties as much as I do!

The Yarn

The two priorities I had for this project were a fun, fall color scheme and something that would showcase texture well (hint: squiggles!). While I was browsing the yarn aisle, this orange-y red fuzzy beauty caught my eye and I knew it was the one. And right next to it was the perfect cream! Truly, a match made in heaven. *swoon* A quick trip to the craft store across the street to hunt down just the right shade to complete my trio. Low and behold, I found the most amazing golden yellow!

I also really liked the idea of using Homespun because it’s an underdog yarn. It’s often overlooked due to the boucle style twist. That squiggley appearance the strand has offers a super rustic, wonderfully homemade feel to your project, without your stitches getting completely lost. Which is exactly what we want here!

I chose to make a second set with Wool-Ease Thick & Quick for some variety. As always, this tried and true yarn didn’t disappoint (especially with the new colors that just came out!). It gave a clean and defined look while still feeling homey. Win!

Whatever yarn you decide to work with, you’ll have some stunning new home decor for the season!

Gauge does not matter for this pattern.

NOTES

-The pattern is written in three sizes listed separately here – small, medium, and large.

-Country Pumpkins pictured are worked in either Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn or Homespun yarn. The pattern reads “Ch 14 (20)” whereas “Ch 14” (or the first number listed) represents the stitch count for Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn and “Ch 20” (or the second number listed) represents the stitch count for Homespun yarn.

-One ball of either yarn yields 2 small pumpkins, 1 small & 1 medium pumpkin, 1 medium pumpkin, or 1 large pumpkin

-Once you’ve made a pumpkin or two and understand the construction feel free to play around with rectangle size to make custom pumpkins!

-Rectangle measurements within the pattern are rough estimates – if your measurements are close but not exact, your pumpkin will still come together.

-Stitch counts within <> are final stitch counts for the row.

This flower pot is the cutest! Just looking at the photos makes me wanna squish it! I originally made these little hydrangeas for Mother’s Day because they’re mine and my mom’s favorite flowers. But flowers are appreciated year round, am I right? This would make a great, easy gift for birthdays, anniversaries, just because (!!!), holidays – you name it!

Speaking of holidays… Let’s take a moment to imagine these in a bright red and white to mimic poinsettias… *gasps at my own thought and proceeds to order more yarn*

Read below to find out a bit more about this pattern!

The Design

Amigurumi crochet is a simple method we use to create 3D objects out of yarn. Wild, right? At first, I thought amigurumi was super complicated and intricate – while it can be a little time consuming, it’s no more complicated than crocheting any other project beyond a super beginner level.

I knew I wanted to make a flower pot that wasn’t too large (I don’t have all year to make this thing, after all) but not too small. Just the right size – very close to a real pot of african violets you’d place on your bookshelf or desk! I loved using pastel colors for a feminine looking flower, and I’m so pleased with how this little amigurumi project came together.

The Yarn

I chose to use Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice for the “flower pot” portion of the project, the color called Toffee is the perfect warm tone brown. I used Lion Brand’s mini skeins of acrylic yarn similar to Vanna called DIYarn for the flowers and leaves. This yarn is perfect for this project because you don’t need nearly as much yardage for these elements, but the weight of the yarn and the color scheme offered matches really well with Vanna’s Choice.

It’s like these yarns were made for this project!

Crochet Cactus Coasters with the cutest little clay pot holder you ever did see!

I loved making this little set of crochet cacti coasters for drippy drinks in the summer – they’re so stylish and trendy right now! The crochet pattern is easy to follow and they’re even cuter stored in the little pot holder.

SWEATER PATTERNS I LOVE (& you should too)

The Yarn

I used my favorite cotton yarn for this pattern, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton for the coaster base and some mini skeins of yarn from their DIYarn collection for the accents. You could make this pattern with acrylic yarn too (like Vanna’s Choice) but the cotton yarn will be much more absorbent for drinks that sweat – so keep that in mind when you’re choosing yarns!

If you haven’t tried the 24/7 Cotton yarn before, this is a great place to start! It’s a mercerized cotton so it’s got great shine and a really smooth feel when working with it. It holds up really well to wear and comes in 24 of the most stunning colors! I’ve used it for lots of other projects like my Parisian Tunisian Top and my entire collection of 25 Christmas Ornaments!

-Cactus coasters are worked in the round in one piece. Spikes are embroidered and pink flower is made separately & sewn on.

-Embroidery will show on the back of your coaster but you can hide it by crocheting another coaster piece and sewing together for a double-thick coaster or just storing them in your pot with wrong sides together so that your good side is showing from all angles.

-Ch 2 does not count as a stitch.

Hey Sewrella Peeps! It’s Meg again, from over at Megmade with Love. So, not too long ago, I popped in over here to share the ridged pumpkin, a part of a three-pattern collection of pumpkins. It turns out I enjoyed designing those pumpkins so much that I’ve made three more cutie pumpkins for your crafting pleasure!

And today I’m sharing the pattern for the striped pumpkin with you. It’s oh-so-easy, and just simply beautiful. It can be made in a couple hours, easy! I’m a sucker for black and white, and I think that, plus the stripes makes it look extra classic. But of course, I think any colors would look great!

You can find the other pumpkin patterns over at MegmadewithLove.com. All of them are pretty simple, and make for some pretty great fall decor if you ask me.

Materials:

-worsted weight yarn in two colors (I used Red Heart with Love in Black and Red Heart Super Saver in Aran)

-size K hook (6.5 mm)

-yarn needle

-big handful poly-fil

-hot glue gun

-approx 2 in stick or stem of choice

-adornments of choice (raffia, burlap, jute, felt..)

-optional: rock to weigh down the bottom

Measurements:

finished pumpkin is approximately 8″ tall by 6.5″ wide

Notes:

-the whole pumpkin is worked with two strands of yarn

-since this pumpkin is pretty tall, I put a rock in the bottom to weigh it down so it wouldn’t topple over easily

-there are lots of color changes, I just cut off after each change to pick pack up again on the other side when changing again. This creates a lot of ends, but I found they were easy to conceal inside the pumpkin, so I didn’t worry about weaving them in. Call me lazy, but hey, it works!

-ch’s at the beginning of rows do not count as sts

-if you’re interested in crocheting a little leaf for your pumpkin there’s a pattern for one in this post.

Pattern:

Row 1) using two strands of black: ch 24, dc in 3rd ch from hook and across (22 total sts, and for remainder of the rows)

Row 2) ch 2, turn, dc across

Row 3) change to two strands of white: ch 1, turn, sc across

Rows 4-6) change to black: ch 2, turn, dc across

Row 7-22) repeat rows 3-6 four times

Row 23) change to white: ch 1, turn, sc across

Row 24) change to black: ch 2, turn, dc across

Finish off and leave a very long tail to sew the pumpkin

Assembly:

Below you can see a photo of the piece after it’s been crocheted.

First you will take your tail of yarn and needle and sew row 1 to row 24, creating a tube.

Next you will close up the ends. Still using your yarn and needle, make a running stitch along one of the short ends of your “tube”. Make sure the running stitch is very loose, and use long strides so it will close up for you.

After you’ve gone all the way around the short end with your running stitch, you will pull on the tail of yarn and gather the end up.

Then tie a couple of knots to secure. Draw your yarn and needle through the center of the pumpkin to use for sewing the other end.

Next, you can put your rock on the bottom of your pumpkin- if you choose to do so, and then you’ll stuff your pumpkin full of polyfill. After it’s full, close up the other end of the pumpkin the same way you closed up the first end, with a loose running stitch, pulling tightly to gather.

Then tie a couple of knots again to secure and weave in your yarn to hide.

To finish the pumpkin, put a glob of hot glue in the middle top of your pumpkin then press your stem firmly on top of it until the glue cools. Add any other fun extras to personalize! (the cute little squiggly stuff on this pumpkin is actually yarn that I frogged from the doily pumpkin- lol!)

Hi friends!

I have something extra special for you today – the first ever guest post here on the Sewrella blog! Today’s pattern comes to you from Meg, a sweetie I found through her super cute Instagram and I know you are gonna love her!

Hi all! I’m Megan, owner of Megmade with Love, a crochet blog that features free weekly crochet patterns, downloads and really anything crochet-related! It’s super fun to be here over on Ashleigh’s blog. She’s got the cutest and coolest stuff here on Sewrella, not to mention her incredibly inspiring “How to Start a Crochet Blog” series that actually gave me the extra little inspiration to begin my crochet blogging adventure! So I can attest, that she knows what she’s talking about, and has provided lots of good information on the ins and outs of starting a blog.

Today, I’m bringing you a pattern for the orange-ridged pumpkin in the photo above. The reason I love this pumpkin pattern so much, is that it works up super quick (using two strands of worsted weight yarn) and is so, so simple. Not to mention that it’s pretty darn adorable… You can find the patterns for the other two pumpkins over at the Megmade with Love blog.

I think this pumpkin would be a great, quick make, perfect for craft shows. Or even just for yourself, to use in your own home for cute fall decor!

Worsted weight (category 4) yarn of choice, I used Yarn Bee Soft Secret in Bittersweet

Size H Hook (5mm)

Polyfill stuffing (big handful)

Yarn needle

Hot glue gun

2 inch (or so) stick

Other adornments you’d like to tie around stem (I used raffia, ribbon, jute that was curled..)

Dimensions:

Approximately 5 inches wide by 4 inches tall (not including stem)

Abbreviations:

ch=chain, st(s)=stitches, sl=slip, dc= double crochet, fptr= front post treble crochet

Notes:

ch’s at beginning of rounds do not count as a stitch

**Using two strands of yarn**

ch 32, join to first ch with sl st (make sure not to twist chain before connecting)

1) ch 2, dc into the same ch that you sl st’d into, and dc around in remaining ch’s, join to first dc with sl st (32 total sts)

2-11) ch 2, [fptr, dc into next 3 sts], repeat [ ] around, join to first fptr with sl st (32)

Finish off, and leave a long tail for sewing up the ends.

Once your piece is complete, you’ll sew up the open ends. Take your needle and thread with the tail of your project. Then make a running stitch through one of the open ends on the very outer row of stitches. Sew in long strides to make it easier to gather.

After you’ve gone all the way around, you’ll pull your yarn tight to gather. Then secure with a knot. I didn’t cut the yarn or unthread the needle. I just let it hang out so I could use it to sew up the other side, just pull it through the inside.

Then stuff your punkin’ plum full of poly fill..

You’ll do the same thing with your yarn and needle to the other open end. Sewing in and out to gather the top, and knot again to secure.

Then I chose to sew back and forth a couple times through the middle to make the pumpkin a little more “squat” looking. I tied another knot after I was done, then weaved in my ends.

Last you will put a glob of hot glue onto the middle of your pumpkin, and hold your stick onto it firmly until the glue cools.

Tie on your adornment of choice, and then you’ve got yourself the cutest little fall decor piece!
