Behold, the Lana Kimono!
This kimono has been a concept in my head since the beginning of the year. I always put other projects ahead of it on the to do list, and now I don’t know why I did!
This is easily my favorite crochet garment I’ve ever made. It’s lightweight, RIDICULOUSLY easy to make, and so effortlessly stylish.
I named this kimono Lana, after one of my favorite musicians – Lana Del Rey. You may remember her hit Summertime Sadness from a few years ago, but I’ve loved her for many years. I listen to all of her albums on repeat and really identify with the journey she’s been on. Anyway, back to crochet!
The Lana Kimono is assembled from two large rectangular crochet panels made up of double crochet. That’s it! You crochet two rectangles, then sew it up, add some fringe and wear your Lana Kimono around town. LIKE A BOSS.
PATTERNS I LOVE (& you should too)
1. Crochet Homemaker Gingham Throw / 2. Crochet Everyday Cardigan / 3. Crochet Le Nuage Wrap/Triangle Scarf
I’ve written this pattern in sizes Original, and Tall & Curvy. Really, anyone can wear either. The sample I worked up in Lion Brand Jeans yarn is the Original sizing, and the Shawl in a Ball (ombre style yarn) is a Tall & Curvy. If you’re extremely petite/small frame, I recommend sticking with the Original. If you’re of average size (dress size 4-12) you can wear either the Original for a more slender fit, or the Tall & Curvy for an oversized, slouchy fit. If you normally shop in the plus size category, Tall & Curvy is for you!
I love both the samples I made, and really don’t have one yarn recommendation for you over the other. Lion Brand has a wonderful yarn lineup, and I loved working with both Jeans and Shawl in a Ball. This pattern would be great worked up in a cotton yarn for a summery kimono, too! (<< more on this soon)
Lion Brand is now offering the Lana Kimono pattern as a kit with the Shawl in a Ball yarn pictured above! Isn’t that gradient effect mesmerizing? I didn’t do all that color changing, it’s all the yarn – I just crocheted my panels and it striped like magic! You can grab your Shawl in a Ball Lana Kimono kit from Lion Brand HERE in either size and several color options. You’ll be glad you did!
So what I’m saying is, make this kimono in any size, using any yarn. Just make one already!

It’s worth noting that many people may be able to wear either size, with Original being more fitted/shorter and Tall & Curvy being oversized.

It turned out great, Ashleigh! 🙂
Mandy Durdin says
Approximately how many yards do you need for the original size?
Patricia Bittinger says
Ashleigh, do you think this would work up with boucle yarn? That is what the teal yarn I showed you before happens to be. I’ve not worked with this before. Thanks
Gwyn Goodrow says
Beautiful! I want to make the loose and comfy version using some of my stash yarn. How much yarn is in the 5 balls (for Tall & Curvy)?
Shady Creek Lane says
Ashleigh, so this so pretty. I can’t wait to try it out. I just ordered the same yarn you used and it should be here by Tuesday! Looks great for an easy project!

What is the approximate width of the two sizes? I have started the project and a very loose crocheted. I am using Lion Brand shawl in a ball. Thx for your help.
Wanda says
Ashleigh thank you for sharing this pattern. I have been watching similar shrug patterns showing up everywhere but didn’t feel like my crochet skills were adequate but then you posted this Dc pattern and assembly and this beginner is 7 rows in to her first panel. Thank you so much. I am hopeful it turns out as beautifully as yours did! Thank you again for designing it to meet this beginner’s skill level.
Tammy Powley says
What are the dimensions of the finished rectangles?
nicolette says
what are the measurements in inches for the panels? I’d love to utilize the idea of this for a knit garment rather than crochet. Or maybe even some lace work.
afshan says
Can u plz give the measurememt of both sizes of rectangles in inches yoo. Howw long and wide they were. As i am using a chunky yarn . I would appreciate it . Ty

I absolutely love this kimono but I don’t know what I did wrong. I followed the pattern exactly for the original size and it came out way to big. Oh well I will try it again!
Ashleigh says
Try going down a couple of hook sizes!
Elaine says
I really like this and will make one for my daughter! I only know how to make a granny square so I might not be as skilled as you re keeping the panels as straight as yours. Therefore, I may resort to knitting the cardigan. Your video was great with clear instructions and your voice was perfect. Well done! Do you mind telling me what the dimensions are for each panel, please? Thanking you in advance!
Sarah says
What is your secret to keeping your stitches dense/tight in this kimono with the N hook? I tried and it was way too lose so I went down to a L hook but I still feel like my stitches are too lose even though I’m crocheting tight. I’m also using cotton yarn so that might be a factor.
thanks!

What is the size of Rectangles? Thanks for sharing!
Andy says
Can you give gauge if possible? I would love to make this for a friend.

Hi Ashleigh, I’m new to your site but really love this pattern! Can you tell me what color did you make the one with Shawl in a Ball?
