A cute little crochet mint leaf!

I’ve been loving gardening lately, especially after being at home so much this year. I’ve started growing four different kinds of mint plants – peppermint, chocolate mint, sweet mint and spearmint!

I’ve been brewing lots of mint tea (recipe below!) with the cuttings from my plants and it inspired me to crochet some little mint leaves! I couldn’t find a pattern for any so I decided to make one up.

Uses for a crochet mint leaf

Little crochet accents like this are great for adding to larger projects. This leaf could be used alongside crocheted flowers for home decor projects like wreathes and tabletop arrangements or it could be sewn next to a crochet rose on a baby hat!

The possibilities are endless and patterns like this crochet mint leaf allow you to get creative.

The Yarn

I used some scrap green yarn I had hanging around – one that’s my own hand dyed yarn in a color from last fall called Lodge and the other is a bit of Lion Brand Heartland in the color Kings Canyon. You could use any yarn to make this crochet mint leaf, I would just reduce the hook size by two or three sizes from what the yarn label recommends to make sure your leaf is stiff enough to hold its shape.

Fresh Mint Tea

1. Pick 1/2 cup fresh mint leaves, wash, pat dry, add to teacup or mug
2. Bring water to rolling boil, pour over tea leaves
3. Steep ten minutes
4. Strain or spoon leaves out
5. Add a teaspoon of honey or sugar and stir. Enjoy!

Crochet Coasters that are perfect for every table!

I recently discovered a stitch called the thermal stitch and I’m in love! In playing with it I figured out an easy way to crochet this stitch simply and easily – check out the video tutorial here! I loved the texture and thickness of the stitch and immediately wanted to figure out a way to bring this woven look into my home with it’s own pattern.

We all have that end table or coffee table that we set our coffee, tea, lemonade, (or if we’re being responsible adults) water down on right? My favorite end table has a glass top and I can’t stand when a glass sweats and makes a ring of moisture on the table, yuck! NOT TO MENTION IF A MUG WERE TO SCRATCH MY GORGEOUS WEST ELM END TABLE. Good grief, that stresses me out just thinking about it.

So when I thought about how to bring the thermal stitch to life and what my home could use – a crochet coaster pattern felt just right!

Crochet Coasters make the best gifts

These crochet coasters make great holiday or hostess gifts (they take about 20 minutes per coaster to make!) – I’ll be giving sets of these along with my favorite tea tied up with a fluffy piece of scrap yarn. Gift giving season never looked so good – or was so utilitarian!

The Yarn

I had quite a few skeins of Lion Brand’s new cotton blend yarn Re-Up lying around the house and I loved them for these crochet coasters. The color lineup has some great neutrals to go with my home decor – that rustic grey has a bit of heather to it and is so pretty in person!

I held two strands of yarn together for this pattern to make the crochet coasters EVEN thicker – I love the texure it gives! I held together two strands of the Ecru color but you could hold together a strand each of two different colors to get a marled effect. That’s actually what I did with my crochet potholders pattern that matches this set and they turned out gorgeous!

I highly recommend using cotton yarn for this pattern – Re-Up is a wonderful option due to the color choice and the price point ($1.99 per skein, 2 skeins make 4 crochet coasters!) but other cotton yarns would work too. Just make sure to stay away from acrylic or primarily polyester yarns to be sure hot beverages don’t melt the fibers. Cotton also performs better than other fibers when wet should you encounter a spill!

Crochet Potholders that are perfect for every kitchen!

I loved making this little set of crochet cacti coasters for drippy drinks in the summer – they’re so stylish and trendy right now! The crochet pattern is easy to follow and they’re even cuter stored in the little pot holder.

The Yarn

I used my favorite cotton yarn for this pattern, Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton for the coaster base and some mini skeins of yarn from their DIYarn collection for the accents. You could make this pattern with acrylic yarn too (like Vanna’s Choice) but the cotton yarn will be much more absorbent for drinks that sweat – so keep that in mind when you’re choosing yarns!

If you haven’t tried the 24/7 Cotton yarn before, this is a great place to start! It’s a mercerized cotton so it’s got great shine and a really smooth feel when working with it. It holds up really well to wear and comes in 24 of the most stunning colors! I’ve used it for lots of other projects like my Parisian Tunisian Top and my entire collection of 25 Christmas Ornaments!

You know how you indulge in a pint of ice cream and after about two bites your fingers are freezing? Kind of ruins the ice cream experience, right?

I would always grab a dish towel to wrap around my pint, trying to battle the frozen-finger syndrome. It never worked too well because the towel was cumbersome and too big for my little pint. It just wasn’t as effective as I’d liked.

The other night I had a few bites of my favorite dairy-free ice cream, and while I was in the middle of crocheting another project- it dawned on me. Why don’t I just crochet a solution to this problem.

About 20 minutes later, the crochet ice cream coozie was born! This coozie will fit any pint of ice cream – no matter the flavor.

This pattern is super beginner friendly, using only basic stitches. Everybody who eats ice cream needs one!

Materials:

-Lion Brand Fast Track Yarn (I used Pink Convertible)

–Size N/P 10mm hook

My great grandmother Betty was, above all, a seamstress. She made clothes of all shapes and sizes, but her favorite thing to sew were gowns. She made all kinds of fancy dresses for all different occasions, and even took a class in making wedding gowns.

So when I was deciding what part of her life I wanted to draw inspiration from for this trivet, I thought of her many flowing, ruffled handmade gowns. I wanted this trivet to resemble the detail and feminine flair that her gowns always had.

Enter, the wiggle stitch! You don’t need experience with this stitch to make this trivet, it is just a series of double crochets. Neat, huh?!

Basically you first create a trellis or mesh and then work stitches on the bars of the mesh back and forth. This makes the stitches stand up tall, giving a bit of lift to the trivet.

I wanted this trivet to have loads of texture so that when you set something hot on it, it would allow air to circulate and cool the bottom of your pot or pan – avoiding scorching your table!

PATTERN
Materials:
-Cotton yarn, I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in white, lilac, mint, rose, and pink
-Size H 5mm crochet hook
-Tapestry needle

The Trellis:
Using any color (I used lilac), Ch 62
Row 1: Dc in the 7th st from hook, *Ch 2, skip 2, DC in next, repeat from * across, Ch 4, turn
Rows 2-18: *Dc, Ch 2, skip 2, repeat from * across, CH 4, turn
Row 19: *Dc, Ch 2, skip 2, repeat from * across, finish off, weave ends

Ruffles (wiggle stitch):
Find the center of your trellis: starting at the top left corner, count to the right 10 “bars” and down 10 “bars”
Round 1: Join white yarn to this center bar, Ch 3, 4 Dc on this bar.
Follow the graph below in a counter clockwise direction, beginning with the top black arrow. Only work one color or round of stitches at a time, working 5 Dc over each bar indicated.

Ain’t it just the most darlin’ thing?

I saw this stitch on Pinterest (because, duh, you find everything there) and I said to myself “Self, you gotta make something with that!” And so this placemat was born.

Again, inspired by my great grandmother Betty, for who this series is named we continue with the Summer Kitchen Series! If you haven’t seen them, check out the coasters (HERE), bumpy scrubby dishcloth (HERE), and the marbled oven mitt (HERE). My grandmother would have loved this fun, whimsical harlequin stitch, it’s almost as playful as she was!

I followed the video tutorial below to learn the stitch – when you get to Rows 2-20 you’ll need to follow this video. I could write out all the steps to this stitch, but it’s really best explained in the video – I’d hate for your placemat to end up wonky because you skipped watching the harlequin stitch professional!

-Worsted weight cotton yarn – I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Lilac, Mint, Pink, Rose, and White (1 skein of each will make 2 placemats)
-Size H 5mm crochet hook

Row 1: Sc in each st across, Ch 2, turn

I have the third installment of my Summer Kitchen Series for you all!

It’s a really fun oven mitt with a marbled effect – this is achieved by crocheting 3 different colored strands together at once. You could use 3 strands of the same color for a solid oven mitt. This mitt works up so quickly and the best part? It could double as a bath mitt!

Be sure to use cotton yarn and the same hook size that I use (an L 8mm hook) so that you get a very tight stitch. This may be a bit uncomfortable to crochet as working tight stitches with 3 strands feels different from stitching along normally, but it is essential to this oven mitt protecting from the heat of the oven.

To protect further against a hot pan, line this mitt with a thick fabric or quilt batting. Although, this pattern creates a thick crochet oven mitt so you should be just fine.

 

As far as sizing, this mitt is a bit of a slimmer fit, fitting snuggly on an adult woman’s hand. I created this pattern a bit smaller because I hate when an oven mitt slips off – what good does it do protecting against a hot oven while slipping and sliding? No good, I tell ya!

If you missed my last post (the first Summer Kitchen Series installment) on Betty’s Crochet Coasters, and all of the wonderfulness that was my great grandmother (after whom this series is named), see that HERE!

As for the next installment of my Summer Kitchen Series, I have a really easy & fun dishcloth for ya! You can never have enough dishcloths in my house, being that we cook at home most of the time – things are always needing a good scrub!

I love this cloth because it uses a waffle stitch, so it has an ultra ribbed texture to it (thus, the “bumpy scrubby”) – great for catching gunk when cleaning up. And I purposely made these a bit smaller than a traditional tea towel, really more the size of a washcloth. I don’t like using big, cumbersome towels for scrubbing in the kitchen. I like a little handy towel, so this guy is just the ticket!

And of course, because this cloth isn’t just any old cloth, it’s part of my series inspired by my amazing great grandmother, it needed some pizazz. Just a nice finishing touch to really make this guy beautiful as well as utilitarian – a simple, pretty border would complete things just perfectly!

Get going on this little guy and clean with something beautiful!

Row 1: Dc in the second Ch from hook and in each st across, Ch 2, turn
Row 2: Begin waffle stitch – Dc in the first st, *Fpdc in the next st, Dc in the next 2 sts, repeat from * across, Ch 2, turn
Row 3: Fpdc in first 2 sts, *Dc in next st, Fpdc in next 2 sts, repeat from * across, Ch 2, turn
Rows 4-29: Repeat alternating rows 2 & 3 (you should end on a Row 3 stitch)
Row 30: Dc in the first st, *Fpdc in the next st, Dc in the next 2 sts, repeat from * across, Ch 1
Row 31: Sc evenly around the perimeter of the work, making 3 Sc in each corner of the dishcloth
Finish off, join white yarn, Ch 1
Row 32: Sc in each st around, making 3 Sc in each corner of the dishcloth, sl st to join
Finish off, join mint yarn, Ch 1
Row 33: Sc in each st around, making 3 Sc in each corner of the dishcloth, sl st to join
Finish off, join white yarn, Ch 1
Row 34: Sc in each st around, making 3 Sc in each corner of the dishcloth, sl st to join
Finish off, join lilac yarn, Ch 1

I’d like to tell you about someone very special to me.

My great-grandmother was a simple woman. She loved family, sewing, and her cats without much need for anything else. She was incredibly feminine, never visiting with company without her “face on.” She was a homemaker, taking care of her kids, their kids, and their kids for her entire life – and she loved every minute of it. She was gracious and delicate, a proper lady. She always wore jewelry – beaded necklaces, dainty little earrings, and her uber-gorgeous wedding rings. She was a fabulous cook, often making things in a traditional, simple, 50s era style. She had a tiny kitchen but never once complained – she still cranked out Christmas dinner with ease.

She was the kindest, most honest & loving soul. She was the kind of woman I hope to be.

So when I was thinking up a summer series, I decided that a kitchen collection inspired by this wonderful woman. With feminine colors (as chosen by my lovely readers in a poll last month!) and simple, delicate design.

These coasters are the first of 6 pieces that make up the Summer Kitchen Series, all named for my great-grandmother Betty. Be sure to keep checking back for more kitchen goodies!

PATTERN:
Materials
-Cotton yarn: I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in Lilac, Rose, Mint, and White (1 skein will make about 6 coasters)
-Size H 5mm crochet hook
-Tapestry needle

Begin with a magic ring, Ch 2
Round 1: 10 Dc inside the ring, sl st to join, Ch 2
Round 2: 2 Dc in each st around, sl st to join, Ch 2 (20 sts)
Round 3: 2 Dc in each st around, sl st to join, Ch 2 (40 sts)
Round 4: (Dc, Ch 2, 2 Dc) in first st, skip a st, Sc in next st, skip a st, *(2 Dc, Ch 2, 2 Dc) in next st, skip a st, Sc in next st, skip a st, repeat from * around 8 more times, sl st to join, finish off, weave ends
-With accent color (I used white) surface slip stitch between rounds 3 and 4, sl st to join, finish off, weave ends
[To surface slip stitch, begin with a slip knot at the back of the work. Insert your hook where you want your first st to lie and pull the slip knot to the front of the work, holding the working yarn at the back. Insert your hook in between the next two sts, yarn over (hook and yarn should be behind the work), pull up a loop to the front of the work, and pull through the loop on your hook to complete the slip stitch. Continue around.
