I’m so excited to share with you my favorite yarn DIY to date, this pretty Yarn Loop Wreath with Bernat Blanket EZ yarn from JOANN!

There’s a new yarn on the block and I have a feeling you’ll be seeing lots of DIYs and patterns using it over the coming season – its a new needle-less knitting yarn that’s so versatile. I’ll tell you more about it below!

The DIY

Let’s talk home decor. I haven’t crocheted much for my home this year but when autumn is approaching, I want to cover the house in yarn! That’s why when I saw this new loop style yarn I knew I had to make something for the home.

Instead of knitting with this needle-less yarn as intended (which is SO much fun, let me tell ya!) I wanted to use the texture of the yarn itself to create a no-skills DIY. If you’re crafty enough to wield a hot glue gun and avoid burning yourself, you can make this wreath.

I always think of my sister when I DIY this way. She loves to craft but doesn’t have the time or energy to devote years perfecting a skill like crochet or knitting. She needs her makes to be done in a flash and look great, so this is the perfect project for her!

I love projects like this one. It’s inexpensive, looks great forever, and is a fun mindless project that takes about half an hour start to finish. What could be better than that?!

The Yarn

Bernat Blanket EZ yarn is a totally new innovation – it’s a yarn that comes with pre-made loops that make knitting (or learning to knit) faster and easier than its ever been before! I do know how to knit, and enjoy it, but using this loop style yarn skips the needles and gets right down to business.

I think this yarn would be great for teaching kids or new crafters to knit! It’s a wonderful stepping stone between basic crafting and intricate knitting. Folks can learn how the loops and stitches come together to make classic knits and purls without also learning to hold needles, cast on and off at the same time. A lot of first time yarnies get overwhelmed in the beginning and this is a wonderful product to combat that!

Bernat Blanket EZ is also super soft and squishy. It has the same feel as the classic Bernat Blanket Yarn that we all know and love. It’s soft, chenille-like, and has great texture – which is why I love this yarn for a simple DIY like our loop wreath here! All the texture this wreath needs is built right into the yarn – all you have to do is wrap and glue. So easy! Watch out here on the blog for some more fun tutorials using this yarn and others like it coming to the marketplace soon!

TUTORIAL

I’ve got loads of photos to help you though this tutorial below, don’t forget to PIN this project for later HERE!

Materials:

–Bernat Alize Blanket EZ Yarn (Weight: 7/Jumbo – 6.4oz, 18 yds)

Colors pictured: Country Blue, Cream, and Denim

–Hot glue gun

–12″ styrofoam wreath form (16″ will require 2 skeins of yarn)

–Home Decor Accents from JOANN (try small signs, fabric pumpkins, dried florals, and other small lightweight accents)

Instructions:

Heat up your glue gun and find the end of your skein of Blanket EZ yarn.

Apply a dime sized dab of hot glue to the styrofoam wreath and push yarn end into place.

Wrap yarn around wreath form by bringing the skein through the wreath and around to the outside. Try to keep loops fluffed out and string style base against the wreath form.

Continue wrapping yarn around and around entire wreath form. Keep wraps close together and add a dab of hot glue every 5 wraps. You may also wait to hot glue until the end if you’d like to adjust how close together your wraps are.

Accessorize your loop wreath with home decor accents from JOANN! I grabbed some dried floral elements and a wooden “home” sign from the home decor section at my local JOANN store to accent my country blue colored wreath.

Dab on a blob of hot glue on the back of your dried florals and place on wreath. Plush and hold for about a minute to set.

Hang wooden sign behind your wreath on a wreath hanger and love your DIY decor all year long!

I repeated this same process with cream Blanket-EZ yarn and hot glued on a cute gingham pumpkin, also from the home decor section of JOANN!

Springtime is the time for bunnies & flowers. Okay, every day is the time for bunnies & flowers, but during springtime – they’re essential.z

My front door was looking a little empty, and that needed to be fixed ASAP. I love decorating for the season so I knew I needed something that screamed SPRING!

And the succulent & rose bunny wreath was born. Amen.

This wreath is made up of a few different parts – the base, the roses, the succulents, the bunny, and the lettering. You can go as far as embellishing your wreath just like I have, or stop at any point along the way when you feel your wreath is full enough.

As far as the wreath base goes – it’s very similar to my One Skein Wreath Base – just a bit longer to fit a larger wreath form. So if you have any confusion on the wreath base portion of the pattern, see that pattern for more photos on it all coming together!

PATTERN

Materials:

-Worsted weight yarn (I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice in Black, White, Sky Blue, Pink, Dusty Purple, Rose Shocking, and Red Heart Soft in Guacamole)

-Size H 5mm crochet hook

-16 in. styrofoam wreath form

-Hot glue gun

-Mini chalkboard & chalk/chalk marker

-2″ wooden letters (H, O, & P)

-Small amount of cardboard

-1″ pom pom maker (optional)

-Tapestry needle

Wreath Base:

With white Ch 21, Sc in 2nd and across, Ch 1, turn (20)

Rows 2-176: Sc in each across, Ch 1, turn (20)

Color change alternating black and white every 8 rows. (Pro Tip: Carry your yarn up the side of the work when you change colors so that there aren’t as many ends to weave!)

Finish off leaving a long tail (about 3 feet). With a tapestry needle, sew Row 176 to Row 1 to form a loop.

Wrap the base around the wreath form and whip stitch the 2 raw edges together still using your long tail. Make sure that the stripes match up with one another as you go around. Weave ends.

With white yarn, sl st into the center of Row 16, Ch 20, sl st into the center of Row 8, finish off & weave ends. Hang wreath by this strip.

Roses & Succulents:

HERE is the Rose Pattern. Make:

• 2 small pink
• 2 small rose shocking
• 1 small dusty purple
• 1 large dusty purple
• 1 small white

HERE is the succulent pattern. Make 2 small & 1 large.

With a tapestry needle, sew to the wreath base positioned as pictured or as you prefer. Weave ends.

Bunny:

With sharp scissors, cut a bunny shape from the cardboard. Mine is about 6″ tall and 3″ wide. Try your best to get it symmetrical.

With a hot glue gun to secure, wrap the bunny with sky blue yarn from top to bottom.

Make a 1″ wide white pom pom, snip the tails, and hot glue it to the blue bunny.

Hot glue the blue bunny to the wreath positioned behind some flowers.

Lettering:

With a hot glue gun to secure, wrap the wood letters with rose shocking yarn from top to bottom.

Hot glue letters to the top of the wreath. Hot glue mini chalkboard next to yarn wrapped letters. Use your chalk or chalk marker to write “on in!”

Hi all!

This holiday season, I wanted a fresh wreath on my door.

No, not a wreath fresh from the store. But one made of real Balsam stems!

All of the fresh trees I could find were REALLY expensive. Like you could almost buy a whole tree for that price.

So my friend Claudia and I found a wreath making class at our local hipster spot – yes!

$90 admission fee for a basic wreath? – no!

You see, I don’t want to pay $90. I want to pay $20. For a fully decorated wreath, to my liking.

And to top it off, I ENJOY making things! (could you tell??)

So I set about putting something together – and in a hurry! Christmas is almost here!

I went to my local craft store, grabbed some fake florals to embellish my wreath, a wire wreath form, and then headed to the most extra special place…

the Christmas tree lot! You know how they trim down the trunk of the trees and the bottom branches that aren’t so pretty? Do you know where those branches go?

THE LANDFILL.

So yes, Sewrella dumpster dived for wreath makings. And I have no shame.

Because I filled my trunk with the most beautiful branches for free!

All in all, the supplies for this wreath cost about $20. This wreath turned out beautiful without any of my embellishments too! Then you would be out the door for under $10. WOW.

Of course one of these embellishments had to be a crochet accent! And what says Christmas more than a crochet bow? I’ve got the pattern for that at the bottom of my post too.

Let’s get to the tutorial.

Materials:

–18 in. wire wreath form

–Green floral wire

-Wire cutters

-Floral accents with plastic stems (I found plastic succulents, berries, gold leaves, and pinecones!)

(you could easily DIY these by using fresh berries, spray painted leaves, and found pinecones, but I was on a time crunch)

–Partial skein of Lion Brand Hometown USA in Boston Cream

–Size N/P 10 mm crochet hook

–Jumbo tapestry needle

I have in depth photos below to explain the attaching process, follow along or scroll down for the crochet bow pattern!

Begin by trimming your branches down to little sprigs of tree.

Once you have a bunch of small trimmings, grab your wreath form and place the sprigs where you’d like them. Wrap the floral wire around and around to secure a branch to the form.

Working down below the last placed stem, place more stems and wrap around each one a few times with the wire. When you can, place the stem under some existing rows of wire and continue wrapping.

You may need to trim more branches as you go, you may not. Make your wreath as full as you like!

So there is my partially finished wreath, about halfway being filled out!

After you’re done filling the wreath in, snip your floral wire and wrap it around the wreath base & twist to secure.

Fast forward to the finished wreath…

Now for the embellishments!

Cut the leaves, and pretty parts off of their stems.

Cut a piece of wire about 10 in. long, wrap it around the accent…

Place it where you like on the wreath, thread the wire through the branches to the back of the wreath form, and twist to secure.

Repeat with all accents, including the crochet bow.

CROCHET BOW PATTERN

Ch 21, Sc in 2nd from hook and across, Ch 1, turn (20)

Rows 2-17: Sc across, Ch 1, turn (20)

Row 18: Sc across, finish off leaving a long tail for sewing.

Holding your rectangle longways (up and down), log roll it up and sew the two longest sides of the rectangle together. Weave ends.

With a scrap piece of yarn, pinch the center of the bow and wrap the yarn around 20 times to secure. Tie a knot and tie onto the wreath.

– Pick up magic ring tail through the center of the magic ring, Ch 6 with it, Sc in 2nd Ch from hook and across, weave end back into top of acorn

– Place brown cap on beige acorn and sew into place with a tapestry needle

Pumpkin:
*Don’t join rounds, place a stitch marker in the first stitch of each round and movie it up with each round
With G 4.5mm hook and terracotta yarn, make a magic ring, 6 Sc inside ring
Round 2: 2 Sc in each around
Round 3: 2 Sc, Sc, repeat around
Round 4: 2 Sc, Sc next 2, repeat around
Round 5: 2 Sc, Sc next 3, repeat around
Round 6: 2 Sc, Sc next 4, repeat around
Round 7: 2 Sc, Sc next 5, repeat around
Rounds 8-14: Sc in each around
Round 15: Sc decrease, Sc in next 5, repeat around
Round 16: Sc decrease, Sc in next 4, repeat around
Round 17: Sc decrease, Sc in next 3, repeat around
Round 18: Sc decrease, Sc in next 2, repeat around
Round 19: Sc decrease, Sc in next, repeat around
Round 20: Sc decrease 6 times, finish off leaving a tail about 3 feet long

– Thread tapestry needle with tail, insert into magic ring, and down out through Round 20, pull tight to create seam, repeat four more times

Stem:
With toffee Make a magic ring, 5 Sc inside ring
Rounds 2-3: Sc in each around, fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing, sew onto top of pumpkin

Bow:
With H 5mm hook and Wine yarn Ch 13, Sc in 2nd from hook and each across, Ch 1, turn
Rows 2-53: Sc in each across, Ch 1, turn
Row 54: Sc in each across
Row 55: Sc Row 54 to Row 1 holding the ends together (as you did with the wreath cover), don’t finish off just yet

– flatten the loop you’ve created with the seam in the back, cinch the center of the bow into place, and wrap the working yarn around the center roughly 30 times (be sure you don’t pull out your seam stitches when you do this!), finish off and weave ends

Bow tails:
*make 2
Ch 5, Sc in 2nd and across, Ch 1, turn
Rows 2-19: Sc in each across, Ch 1, turn
Row 20: Sc in each across, finish off leaving a very long tail for sewing

– Sew each tail into place on the back of the bow, and sew the bow to the center of your wreath, weave your tails back at forth at least three times to secure it

– With beige Ch 9, Sc in 2nd and across, finish off leaving a long tail. Sew your string of single crochets to the top center of your wreath for hanging and weave ends

Hanging your wreath!

I chose an Outdoor Command Metal Hook for my wreath – I needed something both sturdy (holding up to 5 pounds, way more than my wreath!) and beautiful.

My front door has silver hardware and I wanted
a wreath hanging device that would match and look like it belonged with or
without a wreath on it – this metal hook in “brushed nickel” was
perfect!

It matched my existing hardware perfectly. It
looked like it came on the door and was always meant to be there!

I loved that this hook was easy to apply in a couple of minutes without any
help from the hubs – yay girl power! If you need help applying your hook CLICK HERE.

 

My wreath was on the door and looking beautiful so quickly and effortlessly –
AND NO NAILS IN MY DOOR! Also no tacky metal over-the-door wreath hangers. I’d
much rather have a simple hook that comes off without any fuss (although why
would you ever take this handy hook off your door, I ask you?)

I was so excited to find my Command Hooks at Target on sale – I saved a few
dollars and that means more money in the yarn budget!

I even picked up a pack of my favorite around-the-house Command General Purpose
hooks, the plain ole utility ones. They’re not as fancy looking as my Metal
Hook out front but they are every bit as purposeful!

I love using them in my studio for quilting rulers and hanging scissors away
from tiny hands. I also use a couple of them to hang a dollar store wire basket
for knick knacks near my desk – super handy to have extras of these little
hooks all around!

This is possibly my favorite one skein project ever – I love it even more than THIS one skein project. And I like that one a lot.

Its a 1 skein wreath!

Now I know this little wreath is a little bare, and could use some loving embellishment (more on that tomorrow!)

But this pattern is the perfect thing to cover those average size, 12 in. foam wreath form.

I picked mine up at the craft store in a hurry but they are sooo much cheaper on amazon if you buy them in bulk {I know I need a crochet wreath for every season, don’t you?} – HERE is my favorite!

Use this basic wreath cover pattern in any colors – team colors for game day, rainbow colors for a kid’s birthday party, or solid colors for a classic, timeless look!

PATTERN
Materials:
– 1 skein Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice yarn (I used Beige)
– Size H 5mm crochet hook
– 12 in. foam wreath
– Tapestry needle (HERE are my favorite angled ones, great for getting around those tight corners in this wreath!)

Ch 23, Sc in 2nd Ch and across, Ch 1, turn (22)
Rows 2-140: Sc in each across, Ch 1, turn (22)

Row 141: Holding Row 1 to Row 141 Sc in each across, finish off leaving a tail 3 ft. long for sewing

– Fold wreath cover around foam wreath and sew up using a tapestry needle
