Crochet Puff Stitch Bun Beanie

December 15, 2016 by Ashleigh

So the new viral craze is the mom bun or messy bun beanie.

If you are on Pinterest or in any crochet groups on any social medias – you’ve seen these beanies with a hole in them EVERYWHERE.

If you’re like me, you’ve also seen lots of friends/family members sharing them and hinting heavily that they want one for Christmas.

In typical Sewrella fashion, I wanted to make up my own pattern. There are plenty of cute ones out there, but none that really grabbed my attention.

My original Puff Stitch Beanie pattern (that was the first thing ever published on my blog!) was my inspiration for this one. It just needed a bit restructuring, but the general idea is the same – a puff stitch hat with some kind of band around the bottom.

This hat, unlike the original puff st beanie, is worked from the top down, starting with the hole for your hair.

I made the hole about 2.5 in. wide, so there is plenty of room to get through a thick ponytail or bun without stretching out the hat. I didn’t want a huge hole at the top though, because then it becomes a thick ear warmer – not the point!

This whipped up super quick for me – in about 2 hours. The puff stitches take a while, but you could make one following my pattern and counts then use a chunkier yarn that works up faster and follow the same general pattern guidelines (with not as many repeats).

I’m thinking of making up a super chunky version of this hat, so let me know in the comments below if you’d like to see a pattern for that too!

Hello! I need a little clarity on your pattern…

In rows 3-6 where it says “(Puff st in next Ch 1 space, Ch 1) 3 [4,5,etc.] times”, do you mean, for example, 3 puff stitches in one chain one space or one puff stitch in the next 3 chain one spaces?

You will repeat the stitches in () in each of the next 3 (or 4 or 5) Ch 1 spaces. So it should look like puff st, ch 1 in first st, puff st, ch 1 in second st, and puff st, ch 1, in third st. Hope this helps!

Hi Ashleigh, thank you for a lovely pattern! I just thought I would let you know I could not make round 3 work, I don’t have enough chain spaces to repeat the pattern 5 more times. After doing round 2 I had 18 puffs which wasn’t enough to do 6 total sets required in round 3 (24 spaces needed). I added in a round (can we call it round 2.5?lol) as follows:- *(Puff st, Ch 1, Puff st, Ch 1) in the first Ch 1 space, (Puff st in next Ch 1 space, Ch 1) 2 times, Repeat from * 5 more times. Continuing round 3 then works perfectly. 🙂

I’m having a problem understanding the directions with the (). For Example, round 2. the second set of (), I assume it means puff stitch, chain 1 and then move to the next stick and puff stitch, chain 1 and do that 3 times? If that’s the case, I don’t have enough space to repeat the entire sequence 5 times.

      Sorry – I meant round 3!

That’s how I read it too, double puff in the first stitch followed by a single puff in the next 3 stitches. There’s not enough space to do that a total of 6 times so I added a round where you do a puff, ch1, puff in the first stitch followed by a single puff in the next 2 (instead of 3) stitches. Repeat to end of round. I then resumed with round 3 and it’s working out fine.

Nope, you’re going to puff st, Ch 1, puff st all in the same Ch 1 space. You are increasing to make the hat larger to fit the head 🙂
